Print Media Goes Interactive

Welcome to our last print issue of 2022. This will also be the final issue of Estetica which we

are publishing in the now-famous format we developed over thirty years ago. It a format

which has seen the EsteticaNetwork both evolve and consolidate, starting out from the one

international edition we called EsteticaWorld up to the current 17 editions spread all over

the world.

It was at the beginning of the 90s that the Estetica logo we are all so familiar with first

appeared on the cover. We can still see it on this issue, but then it’s all change! It’ll be

evolving towards a more contemporary graphic design and will be distinguished by the word

HAIR in the header.

The true restyling of ESTETICA HAIR will be immediately evident when you start leafing

through one of our Spring 2023 issues: more impactful images, more concentrated and readable

texts, headings that immediately convey what’s being discussed, well-distinguished professional

content, highlighting of ‘unmissable focus points’ and overall harmony in the layout.

The big news, however, is that there will be interactive links between the pages of the magazine

and the digital/multimedia content of our Estetica websites around the world - and all linked

through to social networks.

In fact, Estetica content will be instantly enriched, thanks to your smartphone or tablet:

just scan the QR code and videos and photo galleries appear at your fingertips. Product

information and cutting & colouring techniques will immediately come alive; texts,

interviews and printed news will become more in-depth. Meanwhile, you will be able to take a

front row seat to watch shows, seminars and industry events.

Instant connectivity and availability whenever and wherever you need it, just scan the QR

codes and you’re there! You’ll have one hand to browse through the options proposed in

Estetica and your smartphone in the other hand to make them even more dynamic.

Equally evident is the added value that you can offer to clients who want to browse the

magazine in salon. It’s a new, dynamic way to enjoy those moments of downtime in the salon

between a cut and a colour. So, look out for our Spring ’23 edition of Estetica. If you want to

find out more and preview your ‘digital experience’... here is the QR Code with a preview of the

new ESTETICA HAIR logo. We like it a lot, and hope you do, too!

Male Attitude

Male grooming is an ever-evolving craft with its own unique

dynamism. It’s also a huge global business, especially since men

have become so much more experimental about the way they look.

And men’s hair is trending hard, wherever you’re from! Gary Kelly

RELAXED STRUCTURE

“With male grooming now bigger than ever, we wanted to create an image which reflected the trends of the present, which also show the

progression of the market and the styles that are both popular and relatable to clients of all ages. The first image is inspired by individuality,

the chance to embrace the flexibility of the hair, working with a much more relaxed feel and allowing the individual to embrace their own

creativity and freedom. Movement was the inspiration for this look. The second look is inspired by the strength of a classic square shape – a

much more structured and uniform look, using an architectural like shape to structure the hair and keep it in check at all times.”

Andy Heasman, International Creative Director, RUSH Hair (UK)

Hair: RUSH Artistic Team/Make-up: Lan Nguyen-Grealis/Clothes Stylist: Robert Morrison/Photo: Jack Eames

GENDER FLUIDITY

“This image challenges the boundaries around men’s hair and colour. I love that this look demonstrates a style and colour placement

that is totally wearable for men. I also enjoy the androgynous feel to this image. It taps into the movement around owning our identity,

self expression and gender fluidity. I think the moody green hue here is perfect, not only to suit the model’s fair skin tone, but to create

mystery around the face while also adding interest to the stylised haircut.” Teri Lowe, Creative Director at The Hair Surgery (UK)

SOFT TEXTURE

“Current trends are inspired by classics such as crops and mullets which are still going strong in

2022. Crew cuts are also popular as some men prefer more practical cuts to wash more frequently.

Personally, I love all the possibilities and it has been nice putting some work into changing styles and

working with a lot of hair.” Sindi Devitte, Andis Global Educator (USA)

Hair: Sindi Devitte, Andis Global Educator/Photo: Cunha Photography

TIGHT FADE

“The polished elegance of a tight fade will never be off trend. For a fashion forward feel, create a tight

fade at an angle just above the ear, add a hard part and keep the edges clean. Refine further by grooming

eyebrows and any facial hair to complement the face shape and celebrate the wearers personal style.”

Becka Bradshaw at Sam Villa (USA)

BIG BANGS

“Throwback to grunge. For a woman this side-parted chin-length bob would be somewhat of a classic.

But this androgynous look with the right attitude can work great for younger men as well.”

Mike Taylor (USA)

Hair: Denman Ambassador Mike Taylor @miketayloreducation/Photo: Liam Oakes @liamoakesphoto/Tools: Denman

OLD SCHOOL QUIFF

“Shifting textures and layers, a high and tight undercut, and styling product that enhance the natural

texture of hair come together to create this urban version of an old-school quiff. Today men’s looks

need to be versatile, easy to style into different looks and a means to express their personal vibe.

Depending on the styling products used, this look can easily transform from vintage to modern.”

RED MULLET

“A fire engine red makes the perfect fashion statement for what is already a disconnected and textured mulllet.

Denman tools are great for getting those crisp lines over the ears and shaping the side-swept bangs close to the head.”

Mike Taylor (USA)

ENHANCED DISRUPTION

“I wanted this haircut to almost have a do-it-yourself feel like it had been cut with a ‘knife and fork’ to enhance and disrupt

the texture of the haircut. The inspiration was taken from the punk era to create this anti-establishment, raw neo-punk feel - a

look that could be rejected by the mainstream. I love this image as it injects a sense of reality with unedited purity to create

this strong statement.” Christian Wiles (UK)

ULTRA BLONDE

“To create this image I worked with Jerome Russell. I always keep my looks extremely wearable but also contemporary and

stylish. Not only is this look super on trend, but it also stays true to my signature style – precision cutting and creating

clean, precise hair looks. I used Jerome Russell bblonde bleach to bleach up the hair to this clean, white blonde. For cutting

I did clipper over comb to create a wait line and then point cut the top to create texture throughout the bleached hair.

For styling I used Label M Matte Paste and Volume Foam to create edgy texture and volume in the hair with a matt finish.”

Jim Shaw, Director of TONI&GUY Billericay (UK)

Hair: Jim Shaw for Jerome Russell.

“Jing debuts an eye-catching and bright orange colour, which complements his effortless hairstyle. His flexible look

is perfect for someone who prefers a low maintenance yet put-together appearance. Using Goldwell LightDimensions

and Goldwell Topchic to achieve a glowing orange, Alex also maintains Jing’s length with disconnected layers and hair

texturising - a hairdo that only the likes of K-pop idols would be able to pull off! To maintain this look, Alex recommends

using styling products from the Goldwell StyleSign range such as Creative Texture RoughMan and Texturizer Texturising

Mineral Spray.” Alex Neo (Singapore)

Hair: Alex Neo, Director of The Lawn Hairdressing, Singapore/Products: Goldwell

FASHION BLENDING

“A balance between smoothness and angularity with beautiful blending texture creates a flawless

modern look. With subtle blue and purple tones embracing hair, there is a strong emphasis on

character, especially when seen in sunlight. Finally, leaving a heavy-weight feature line on the top

section generates a ‘Yuppie’ look and transfers it into a sophisticated fashion style.”

JAGGER HOMAGE

“I set out to create a look that would reflect my model’s personality - Milo is in the music industry /model,

rock ’n’ roll edge that I wanted to magnify. His hair was originally just past his shoulders and all one length

- I wanted to create something more lived-in and touchable, an homage to Mick Jagger without being a

direct copy. I cut the hair with a razor, shaping an oval perimeter and shattering the hair to create layers

and texture that are so versatile to style. The finished look has 1970s influences but with a contemporary

twist that makes it surprisingly wearable.” Darren Ambrose (UK)

As well as those who attended at the event’s new venue, Magazine London, hundreds of others also experienced

made for the perfect celebration. The night was hosted on stage by Wella’s much loved artist, Patrick Cameron, and

broadcasting favourite, Denise van Outen. TV and radio presenter, Elspeth Pierce presented the Virtual Broadcast.

OUTSTANDING SHOWS

The evening included 3 stage presentations by top professionals. Opening the celebrations was the inspirational

HOB Academy, led by Wella Top Artist Akin Konizi and featuring the HOB Creative Team. They presented Viper,

intricately patterned skin. The show was edgy, sharp, colourful and captivating. The second show of the evening was

Kaleidoscope, which saw Wella Artists Charlie Taylor, Cobella, House of Colour, James Earnshaw, Karbon Kyd,

Medusa, Sarah Mason Professional and Stil join forces in an epic hair colour extravaganza. To close the event, Wella’s

Salon International retuned to ExCeL London again this

Autumn, where it welcomed thousands of visitors and

hundreds of brands from across the hairdressing industry.

The three-day event really did provide something for everyone - from retail therapy with the hundreds of brands on

offer, to show-stopping stage performances from the biggest names in hairdressing. There were also opportunities

for education, business and networking along with live hairdressing shows and the opportunity to view HJ’s British

Hairdressing Awards Gallery, sponsored by Schwarzkopf Professional. As well as the many new product launches that

were taking place, there were numerous special offers and hands-on demonstrations to enjoy across the exhibition

stands, which included colour houses, software systems, education providers, equipment manufacturers, distributors and

many more. “Salon International was a wonderfully, action-packed weekend”, says HJ’s executive director, Jayne Lewis-

Orr. “Full of inspiration, education and excitement we are so proud of everyone involved and who helped to make Salon

International the incredible show it is.”

SALON LIVE

The exclusive education hub of Salon International, the Salon Live shows provided the opportunity to experience indepth

training sessions with Mahogany, Patrick Cameron, Sassoon Academy and TONI&GUY. The shows provided

hairdressers the opportunity to indulge in the latest techniques across cut, colour and styling, and left guests empowered

with new ideas for both creative and commercial work.

BUSINESS LIVE

The Business Live sessions were particularly relevant this year, given the many economic challenges that our industry

is experiencing due to the significantly higher day-to-day costs of running a salon. Visitors were primed to gain all of

the advice and support they need, thanks to the Business Live Stage, sponsored by the NHBF. Packed full of relevant,

practical ideas and advice, the expert panels covered topics including apprenticeships, mental health, inclusivity and the

shifting freelance model, as well as insight on launching a brand, recruitment and managing and maintaining a

motivated team.

OUTSTANDING BRANDS

From ground-breaking styling tools powered by the latest in cutting-edge technology to everyday salon essentials, Salon

International provided hairdressers with the perfect opportunity to learn more about the newest market launches that

will help drive business forward. Brands who exhibited at this year’s show included Schwarzkopf Professional, Great

Lengths, Diva, Dyson Professional, Level 3, Moroccanoil, Takara Belmont, Maria Nila, Amika, Denman, Crazy Color,

Wahl, as well as this year’s headline sponsor, Zenoti.

Alternative Hair:

Legends 2022

After 2 years of virtual events, Alternative Hair

went LIVE! again with its 2022 show ‘Legends’,

just in time to celebrate its 40 year milestone!

24 events

Photos: Alex Barron-Hough

The Alternative Hair Show presented ‘Legends’ at an exciting Art Deco gem of a venue - the Troxy

Theatre in London’s Limehouse. The prevailing feeling among everyone present was how wonderful it

was to be meeting again in person, thanks to the fantastic support from sponsors and, of course, the

creative hairdressing teams that appeared on stage. As always, the Alternative Hair Show was all about

giving and sharing; inspiring and entertaining and, most importantly, raising funding for a variety of

Leukaemia and Blood Cancer charities. This year’s Alternative Hair Show raised a staggering £103,000.

The original Alternative Hair Show - back in 1983 - was created to raise money for Leukaemia Research

in memory of Valentino Rizzo, Tony and Maggie Rizzo’s young son, who had sadly lost his life to blood

cancer. That core aim and belief remains the same, but as the years have passed, this enduring event

focuses on showcasing the artistry of hairdressing teams from every corner of the globe, as well as

finding and promoting new talent. That's because Alternative Hair is not just about raising money, it’s

also about raising the status of the hairdresser. The hairdressers showing their work on stage are absolute

craftsmen, artists and visionaries. Beyond that, they are dedicated, and embrace the freedom of creativity

afforded them by Alternative Hair. This year’s show entitled ‘Legends’, was made up of 14 teams. New for

this year was the New Visionaries Show, a presentation of the creative work of 18 hairdressers who had

previously won the Alternative Hair Visionary Awards. The final 3 places of the International Visionary

Awards were also announced during the show, with Founder, Tony Rizzo and Alternative Hair Worldwide

President, Anthony Mascolo, announcing the winners: Avant Garde: Lorenzo Marchelle; Cut & Colour:

Creativity

& business

Creative, rich and inspiring, MCB by BS 2022 both achieved

and surpassed its ambitious visitor goal by welcoming over

46,000 participants from all over the world.

Creativity and business were key at this year’s event, which took place from 10 - 12 September. The hair

& beauty professionals present were able to discover new products and emerging trends, while getting

inspired to create new salon looks, enrich their know-how and meet industry experts. Throughout the

three days, creativity, business and innovation were in synergy with dynamism and energy for the 290

exhibitors. The best brands and the most talented protagonists were impressed by the visitor numbers,

which consisted of 40% entrepreneurs and 31.6% employees, with a good international presence - 8.7%

being foreign visitors. Throughout the event, conferences, business presentations, fashion shows and

private receptions helped strengthen the bonds between brands, exhibitors and visitors. The success of

the event was also thanks to the many competitions which were organised, including the OMC World

Championships, as well as an artistic programme of more than 10 hours of shows by internationally

renowned French hairstylists and in which an enthusiastic audience was able to get involved.

Christophe Gabreau, president of Standing Events and

co-organizer of MCB by BS, discusses the importance of design

in the world of beauty.

Best Salon Award 2022

The pinnacle of international design was showcased at the Best Salon Award, held annually at

the MCB in Paris. The 2022 edition saw 80 shows from 15 nations competing. There was ecord

participation from Germany, with 20 applications, but numerous entries also came from Austria,

England, Italy, the Netherlands and Spain. This edition also recorded a consistent presence by

Asian salons, including China, Hong Kong, Japan, Singapore, Taiwan and Vietnam. There were

also two beautiful salons from the United Arab Emirates and the United States. Here are the three

winners: the first place went to the Austrian Egger3 Hair Beauty, which seduced the jury for the

incredible concept based on the harmony of the circle; second place went to Carr Salon, from

China, while third place went to Remedy Room, United Arab Emirates.

Salón Look:

Madrid 2022

Attended by 50,712 professionals, the 24th

edition of Salón Look reached visitor numbers

close to those it was enjoying pre-pandemic. Elisabet Parra

Data collected by Salón Look clearly demonstrates that the 24th edition - held from 21 to 23 October

at the Ifema Madrid convention centre - was a great success. Participation increased by 70% compared

to the previous edition, with a total of 50,712 hair & beauty industry professionals visiting

the event. 300 companies and 1,000 brands were present, including 53 international exhibitors from

15 foreign countries including Belgium, Korea, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Lithuania, Pakistan,

Peru, Poland, Portugal, United Kingdom, Singapore, United States and Switzerland. Numbers were

clearly higher than in 2021 and very similar to those recorded in 2019, in the pre-pandemic period.

After two very difficult years, it is a result that confirms a good performance in the hair & beauty sector.

EXHIBITION AREA

Enthusiasm and positivity could be felt throughout the exhibition, where many companies had a

stage for live demonstrations as well as spaces for successful back-to-back meetings. There was also

frenetic activity in the Hair Focus space, where Estetica witnessed the presentation of diplomas to

the students of the first-ever Hair MBA masters. We also participated in the first creative meeting

of Club Fígaro, at an interesting round table featuring all the members of the Spanish competition’s

professional jury. Like every year, Intercoiffure Mondial organised a traditional buffet, followed by

an exciting documentary dedicated to Manuel Mon, in tribute to the iconic Asturian hairdresser.

CONGRESS

Salon Look was also the venue for many activities, shows and conferences which, in the various

spaces, offered the opportunity for discussion and comparison to the over 4,000 professionals

present. The III Ibero-American Image Consulting Congress and the Hairdressing and Business Management

Congress stood out in particular.

RETURN OF EFFERVESCENE

Effervescene, the show created and produced by Mikel Luzea, was back on the Hair Look catwalk. It included some

big names in hairdressing such as Manuel Mon, Rafael Bueno, as well as the surprising and enigmatic Experimento

No Name. The success of the initiative lies in its ability to bring together great Spanish hairstylists capable of revealing

the techniques, tricks and secrets needed to create looks presented on the catwalk. Sponsors of this unique format

were Revlon Professional, the International Hairdressing Awards and Salón Look.

CLUB FÍGARO

As is the case every year, the event was rounded off with the Club Fígaro Awards, featuring many of the best

commercial and Avant-Garde hairdressers in Spain. Here are the names of the winners: Alba Andreu (Revelation),

Christian Ríos (Men’s Commercial Collection), Experimento No Name (Women’s Commercial Collection), Manuel

Mon (Avant-Garde Collection ), Juliette den Ouden (International Collection) and Rafael Bueno (Catwalk Award).

The title of Spanish Hairdresser of the Year went to Carlos Valiente. Congratulations from Estetica!

Takara

World Business Congress 2022

Held at PACIFICO Yokohama in Japan from 21 - 22

November 2022, the Takara World Business Congress

2022 (TWBC2022) was an interactive event with a deeper

look into the theme of “What Is Beautiful?”.

Welcoming almost 15,000 visitors over 2 days, TWBC2022 has been hailed a huge success by both its

organisers and the delighted visitors who arrived from all over the world. The event was originally

scheduled to take pace in 2021 to celebrate Takara Belmont’s 100th anniversary, but had to be postponed

until now due to lingering concerns post-pandemic. The event was officially opened by Mr. Yoshikawa,

Chairman and CEO of the company. “We are staging an event that will expand the future of salons, as well

as offer new possibilities for people working in the hairdressing and beauty industry”, he explained.

Neo Spa Booth

THE HAIR SHOW: HOT, EXCITING CREATIVITY

A live show is always a great event and a major attraction of TWBC was the 15 teams who perform

on-stage at five shows. The venue was filled with enthusiasm and excitement throughout the day. At

the entrance, an hour before the show started, there was already a long queue of people who couldn't

wait to get in and then. When the doors opened, a huge DJ booth awaited everyone, helping to lift

their spirits and fuel their excitement. On stage, the audience was enthralled by the creations of the

popular salons, with outstanding lighting, sound and visual effects. The audience left the venue with a

look of unquenchable excitement and with a deep impression on their hearts.

BUSINESS & TECHNICAL INNOVATION

The exhibition zone focused on the future of the salon business with an emphasis on technology and

sustainability. Booth highlights included:

The THROUGH THE MIRROR booth, which offered a tour to experience a salon with the mirror

and more than 1,200 visitors taking over the two days. A next-generation device, the mirror’s AI

function of the mirror resolves communication issues between customers and salon professionals.

At the NEO SPA booth, visitors experienced a Head Spa + Head Bath, which can help to reset the mind

and body. 15-minute menu was offered while being surrounded by background music, fragrance and

image films under the 3 themes of ‘Refresh’, ‘Recharge’ and ‘Relax’. NEO SPA was working in conjunction

with three of Takara Belmont’s original head spa brands: LebeL, pittoretiqua and ESTESSiMO.

ELEGANT CREATIONS FROM EUROPE’S ELITE

The OMC Global Symposium, held on the second day of the TWBC, showcased authentic hairdressing

from an elite European artistic team, which elegantly enthralled the audience. The day also included a

display of men’s grooming and barbering, plus the technical work of eight Ladies & Gents hair experts

- those who won gold medals in their respective categories at the 2022 World Championships in France.

The bold, yet refined techniques from some of the world’s best creative minds were generously

applauded by the audience.

BEYOND HAIR EXPECTATIONS,

BEYOND GREAT LENGTHS

Great Lengths has celebrated its 30th anniversary with a beautiful new campaign aimed at

bringing out the identity of the hair extension brand - a perfect mix between the traditional

elements of the brand and the new innovative and future-oriented vision. Hair extensions can

increase hair volume, create chemical-free colour effects and add length. All the five different

looks in the new campaign which are featured here showcase these effects with modern

and current hairstyles. Great Lengths also aims for inclusivity in the world of hair extensions,

proposing hairstyles for anyone of any gender to let people feel self-confident and bold.

GL extensions can

illuminate the hair with light

natural hair of the model,

with GL extensions offers

a natural “sun-kissed”

effect. The colour melting

creates a delicious colour

blend. The shades used

to create this effect are

Royal Oak (03), Heavenly

Hazel (05) and Flawless

Fawn (67).

TURN UP

THE VOLUME

Even for the shortest hair,

volume is essential and

difficult to obtain. The

perfect voluminous cut can

be achieved thanks to

Great Lengths’ extensions.

The colours used to create

this fuller effect are Ice

Queen (59), Summer Siren

(22), Beach Kissed (27) and

Golden Blend (61), creating

a polished and easy-going

shoulder-length bob with

texture, movement, and

dimension.

CHANGING

THE GAME

“Changing the game”

wants to empower the new

inclusive vision of GL

extensions by changing the

-rules- of the game thus

applying also hair on men.

Great Lengths wanted to

include in the 2022

campaign both male and

female models, because

GL extensions are for

everybody, men included.

The shades for this hairstyle

are Heavenly Hazel (05),

Ginger Biscuit (28) and

Honey Bronde (85).

Hellen

Ward

THE HAIR INDUSTRY IN THE UK IS

AT A CRITICAL CROSSROADS. IT FEELS

THAT NATIONAL AND GLOBAL EVENTS

WHICH ARE OUT OF OUR CONTROL

ARE CONSPIRING TO SCUPPER OUR

POST-COVID RECOVERY.

We spoke to Hellen Ward, co-founder and Managing Director of the award-winning

Richard Ward Hair & Metrospa in London’s Chelsea. We asked Hellen to give us her view

on the state of the hair industry and to share some constructive ideas on how best to face

up to the current challenges.

What are the main challenges we’re facing right now?

I believe we are at crisis level as our industry is facing a perfect storm. Changing client

behaviour means clients coming less often. The cost-of-living crisis means clients are

increasingly having services at home. Furthermore, many aren’t fully back in the

workplace post-Covid, or have made life changes. Plus increasing utility costs, increasing

supplier costs, reduced help and government support, penalties on debt repayment,

soaring inflation and a recession! Salons are closing their doors or changing their business

models to try and compete. Some have little understanding of the resulting impact. Only

PAYE salons can employ apprentices, so unless we safeguard traditional salons, we won’t

only face a short-term skills shortage but a long-term lack of staff. I’ve long been a

supporter of freelance workers in our sector. However, there needs to be urgent levelling

up and parity when it comes to how salons operate.

Hellen Ward is cofounder

and Managing

Director of the awardwinning

Richard Ward

Hair & Metrospa in

London’s Chelsea and its

retail brands – Tangle

Angel (sold globally in

40 countries) and RW

Salon Professional (for

Waitrose).

(left): The award-winning

Richard Ward Hair &

Metrospa in London, of

which Hellen is co-founder

and Managing Director.

What steps can salons take to ease the financial burden?

I’ve never believed there’s a silver bullet to sorting out the finances and increasing profitability. Very often it’s a broadbrush

approach of small and subtle changes that add up to making an impact. At a very basic level, it’s good to

remember that there are only 2 ways to increase profit – 1. increase turnover. 2. decrease costs. It sounds simple but

when you can’t find a way, remind yourself that if you work a little on both elements you will get a result. Short term

fixes would include re-negotiating with suppliers (stock, utilities) wherever possible. However, the easiest fix is to look

at your EPOS rates. Most people (98% for us) pay by card now, so get a better deal on the rates you are paying, and even

if you get half a percent off you’ll be making a serious dent in your costs. Services are the most profitable so make sure

this is where you spend your marketing time. We sell time, not products. That mantra has to be at the forefront of all

our business thinking.

Staff retention continues to be a big issue in our industry.

Yes, it is a challenge, but as a sector we don’t often talk about the positives of employment. There are so many reasons

why people might want to stay working in a salon, but it’s the employer’s job to remind them that they won’t

automatically be better off if they go self-employed. It’s a misconception. Showing CPD (Continual Personal Development)

and succession planning is vital to staff retention. Once our trainees qualify, they know that there are lots of different

management and creative routes they can take in the company and that commission is uncapped. They can earn as

much as they like, but it hinges on developing a sound client base. We track KPI’s (Key Performance Indicators) and

tier our commission rates so they increase in line with progression – the more people progress the more they can earn.

Tell us more about the importance of structured training and education.

If you want to embrace the ‘grow your own’ culture you have to be willing to cultivate it in the long term. It’s the acorns

to oak trees scenario. You only create a true ‘tribe vibe’ if you start with the apprentices in your team and encourage

them to develop their own acumen and specialism within your salon culture. We developed our own in-house training

programme hears ago and it’s long and detailed. But 75% of our styling and technical team have come through it, and

now educate it. You cannot underestimate the impact of that on not just staff and team members carrying it out or

going through it, but the ethos it creates. Creating a company culture is key – and the lived experience makes it real.

Finally, what are the positives that make our industry so resilient?

One huge positive is that we don’t have to wait to get paid. Our sector is thought of as being a cash cow industry

because we can look at our columns and practically work out the value of turnover we have booked, and that money

will be in the till by closing time, which means cash flow security. Client behaviour may have changed, but if you

provide a great in-salon experience, there’s no comparison, in my opinion. No other industry is as fun and diverse as

ours – there are so many spin off careers and no other profession cultivates and nurtures young talent like we do. That’s

why we stay young as hairdressers and everything else seems boring. I’ve been in this industry since I was 16 and I love

it. It gets under your skin and I am fiercely protective of it as a career! And finally, lockdown taught us just how valued

we are as an industry – not just physically making clients feel better about themselves but on a holistic level we really do

contribute to people’s emotional wellbeing. We should really start capitalising on that as an industry and shouting about

how incomparable visiting a salon is.

Angelo

Seminara

THERE ARE NOW SO MANY MORE

OPPORTUNITIES FOR PEOPLE TO GROW

THAN THERE USED TO BE. HOWEVER, THAT

DOESN’T MEAN SUCCESS IS GUARANTEED

- YOU STILL HAVE TO TRY. by Sergi Bancells & Gary Kelly

Estetica had the opportunity to meet with the one and only Angelo Seminara in

Amsterdam. There, the Goldwell Global Ambassador presented his latest hair collection

during the Kao Salon Global Experience 2022. He combined an inspirational film

presentation with live models on stage to create an exciting, disruptive hairshow.

How did you come up with the idea of reinventing the concept of a hair show?

It’s something I started doing a while ago. I wanted to make shows more sustainable

and at the same time use the content we create in a different way, such as on social

media. The essence of a show is to get together, to have fun and to enjoy the spectacle.

With ‘Hair Every Wear 2.0’ I wanted to create a dialogue as a means to share and

communicate with my colleagues, especially after three years without seeing each other.

I therefore thought we needed to create something special and entertaining, while

keeping it simple at the same time.

You commented that you don’t see yourself as a master, but as an eternal student.

Yes. I always feel like I’m chasing after something. I need to feel I always have new

goals and challenges to achieve, ones which can also enhance and grow my role as

a hairdresser. I therefore feel it’s better to stay always humble and to accept that

sometimes you need to go into a room, lock yourself in and just practice. While I was

Known for his avant-garde, awardwinning

style, Angelo Seminara is one of

the most globally celebrated hairdressers.

Seminara was named Goldwell Global

Ambassador in the Summer of 2020.

working in the salon with Trevor Sorbie, one day he pulled me to one side.

He told me that I needed to understand that in this industry it’s 50/50: you

can’t just be artistic; if you don’t understand business as well, you can’t survive.

It’s important for young hairdressers to think like that, because nowadays

there are so many more opportunities for people to grow than there were in

the past. This doesn’t mean success is guaranteed – you still have to try.

Sometimes is good to fail - it pushes you to learn and grow.

I definitely agree. Strangely, I sometimes think it’s better to lose in a hair

competition. I know people who’ve been nominated for years and they never

win. However, if you look at their career, it would probably have stalled if it

wasn’t for their desire to keep competing So it’s not about the destination, for

me it’s the journey that really matters -that is what’s really important in life.

These days you are presenting your new tool, Solage. What is it all about?

I like what this tool Solage can do. It’s able to achieve the most beautiful

results in a really natural way. This is because, as its name suggests, it gives

a really sun-kissed effect. We’re talking about the effects of light and creating

something that looks really natural. If you learn how to use Solage confidently,

you can have great fun creating one colour, two colours, three colours, subtle

effects, babylights... whatever you desire. We have created four new

techniques, all based in different lights.

How would you describe it to your colleagues around the world?

Imagine we have two Picasso paintings: I’m going to put one in the dark for

5 years and I’m putting the other one outside for the same time. What do you

think is going to happen? One of the paintings is going to discolour naturally

and that is precisely the beautiful light effect that I wanted to create with hair.

What excites you the most about our industry?

For me, the way we do colour and everything about the world of colour - it’s

what really interests me. I love working with Goldwell and I am really inspired

by the amazing creative opportunities that Elumen and Elumen Play open up

for me. Colour for me is the key - it's also our main business in the salon. I

remember never, never, never leaving a client without colour in their chair.

You do a great haircut but how can you take it to another level? It’s like

turning a light on and you create tridimensionality, texture and volume - all

with colour. A beautiful colour also makes the hair look healthier.

What is your relationship with fashion and art?

I like to work with installations and fashion curators around the world,

because it really isolates me from what I normally do. It takes me into a world

that I don’t know as well as I might. I’ve been so lucky working in places like

China, Korea, USA, Mexico, France, Italy and Austria. I was recently at the

Venice biennale, with the amazing fashion and art curator, Judith Clark.

hairdressers and industry guests, who united at the Kao Salon

Global Experience 2022 to hear the announcements of this

year’s Global Creative Awards winners. Gary Kelly

GLOBAL CREATIVE AWARDS EVENING

For those participating in the competition,

the most highly-anticipated part of the Kao

Salon Global Experience was without doubt

the gala evening held at the Amsterdam

RAI Convention Centre, where the names

of the Gold, Silver and Bronze Awards

winners in each of the categories were

announced. The evening also included two

outstanding stage shows by Angelo

Seminara and Mario Krankl, as well as the

presentation of a truly beautiful collection

to herald the exciting relaunch of Kerasilk

in early 2023. “It was a huge pleasure to be

able to do host the event live again this

year,” said John Moroney, VP Creative &

Communication. “Our salon owners and

stylists were thrilled. It’s a place to meet

up with like-minded artists and create

friendships for life. Every type of creativity

was waiting for the guests – from the

contemporary colour and style of Goldwell

to the street style craftsmanship of KMS

and the chic, editorial styling of Oribe.”

ARTIST AND ACADEMY SESSIONS

Five inspiring Artist Sessions gave guests from

all over the world the opportunity to experience

excellent mastery of their craftmanship. These

were: internationally renowned J.7 Creative

Team from Stuttgart, Germany; EVOLVE, an

award-winning salon based in Singapore;

Oribe Hair Care ambassador, STACEY

CICERON; top international hairstylist HUUB

EYSINK and multi-award winners, TAZ HAIR

CO. The Academy stage in 2022 showcased

five Academy Teams from around the world

sharing the newest trends from their cities.

The best educators & artists joined them live

on stage: Sona Brado & Daniel Bruns,

Agnes Westerman & Sascha Haseloff,

Salome de Wet & Neil Barton, Kylie Bussing

& Jacob Khan and Nicci Welsh. The event

ended with an announcement that the Kao

Salon Global Experience 2023 will be held in

Chicago, USA!
