Glamsquad Girl’s Fashion

Guide: How to Wear Pants

T

hey are not your usual suspects: the list we

compiled of 60+ Nigerian female achievers

was a list of people who were not always in

your face. As a matter of fact, I had not heard

of many but their compelling achievements made it

imperative for them to be included.

Why did we compile this list? As Nigeria marked

it’s 61st independence, with so little to show for it, in

terms of development and infrastructure, we felt that

the individual achievements of many Nigerians is an

indication that the Nigerian is not the problem with

Nigeria.

The problem with Nigeria is the collection of

individuals selected to run the country. In other

words, the problem with the sick nation Nigeria, is its

leadership.

Successive election/selection of leaders who lack

vision have brought the country to this state of near

failure. Yet, while the country lies comatose, Nigerians

all over the world are doing exploits; garnering

accolades.

We decided to focus on just women and, then,

narrow the list to women under 60 years.

Nigeria gained its independence about the time

these women were born. While they have all gone on

to do remarkably well, Nigeria, born around the same

time with them, is still struggling to feed itself.

Robbed of all its resources and potential, Nigeria

is a sorry case. Who will rescue it? It’s a million dollar

question; the answer is blowing in the wind!

See our list of 60+ under 60 female Nigerian

archievers who have done better than Nigeria.

Glamsquad Girl’s

Fashion Guide:

How to

Wear

Pants

Word By Glory Uyi

Hello Glam lovers, today

we will be talking about pants,

pants – pants! Gone are the

days when ladies were stereotyped

to skirts – long done are those days.

Today, the different exciting array

of pant options available in the

market has given women the ray

of hope to dress for any occasion

without getting a wrong perception.

In this article, yours truly will guide

you on the most popular pants

options you should consider and

how to wear them right. I will also be

giving a little something extra on the

type of shoes – and tops you should

rock these pants with.

I am such a guardian angel –

right? Oh yeah, I know. Let’s not

waste words; I know you are all

sizzling to go on with it, as I am.

So, for this piece, I have picked

my top 6 favourite pants – out of the

one zillion of them we have in the

market these days. Trust me when I

say this is one for the girls, enjoy!

Palazzo Pants

Palazzo pants have been around

forever and it is loved by women

of all ages, sizes, and shapes. It is

the direct opposite of skinny jeans

because it is flared from the waist

down to the tip.

It is often made from beautiful

fabrics and prints that give ladies

a rhythmic movement which we

all love. What to wear it with? Wear

fitted tops to contrast the pants

and I love it with hills – although the

palazzo covers the shoes anyways.

Boot Cut Pants

There was a time when boot cuts were the

real deal, they are not as popular as they

used to be but are still in good demand

– and highly fashionable. The pants are

taped at the knee area before they flare

out freely. For tops, it is best to go for a

cropped top or bomber jacket.

These pants were naturally designed

to accommodate boots – hence the

name. So, you should wear it with a

boot, pointed pumps, or high-hilled

sandals.

4

FASHION

Tapered Pants

A Tapered pant is somewhere between

a straight cut and skinny pants. It has a

normal fitting from the waist down to the

thighs but gets narrower from the thighs

towards the ankle. I can see the smile on

your face, you know what I mean, right?

They are also called Peg legged pants

and are best when paired with a satin

top – not longer than the waistline; and a

good pair of strappy sandals. Since the

narrow feature emphasizes the ankle,

make sure your footwear is capable of

turning heads.

Straight Cut Pants

Not my personal favourite, but I can assure you that

this style of pants will flatter your body type – because

it looks good on everyone. It is a straight-down type of

pants – straight cut right from the waist to the ankles.

The best shoes for this type of pants are shoes with heels.

You can decide to wear ankle books or sky-high stilettos.

However, if you have long legs to die for, feel free to

wear ballet flats or any beautiful sandals. Any top will do!

High-

Waisted

Pants

As the name rightly implies,

these are not the regular

patterns of pants and they

have their waistline that

begins from the top of the

navel. They broke into the

fashion trend a few years ago

and do not look like they are

dying down anytime soon.

The interesting aspect about

them is that they can be

skinny or flared at the bottom.

It can also be used with a

corporate or casual outfit.

Throw in a turtle neck and

blazer for a corporate look

and sheer or lace camisole

for a casual blend. The show

can be from high heel to flat,

the choice depends solely on

you.

Words By Amenna Daayo

In this article, we will highlight what

constitutes corporate looks and also illustrate

(with images) the right clothing items and

accessories need to own the office dress

code.

I cannot say this enough, because it is so

true – times are changing! When you talk of

women’s corporate looks in the past only one

thing comes to mind – a woman in a suit! A

long-shirt suit for that matter!

Thank goodness those days are long gone

and today, there is a new definition of what a

corporate look for a lady should be. in fact,

until a few decades ago, pants weren’t even

accepted as corporate attire for women.

Today, things are completely different and

ladies now have the time and freedom to

experiment with their corporate looks. Unlike

before, there is now more flexibility to play

around with fashion pieces and still achieve

that great corporate look you truly crave!

Let’s move on to decode corporate looks

and highlight what it takes to own the office

space as the super fashionista that you are –

yes, a super corporate fashionista!

Rules for

the Perfect

Corporate

Outfit/Look

Trouser

handbag

blazers

No Room for Sloppiness:

A corporate outfit must be tailored

to perfection. You cannot afford to

have an oversize piece – except

cause it is part of the fashion

concept.

It Must Be Respectful: Before

your corporate outfit can command

respect, it must first be respectful in

itself. You should be conservative

of some sort actually if you want to

spot a corporate outfit.

Create a Balance: Make sure

you balance the outfit with the right

attitude and approach and stick to

only one statement piece, rather

than trying to have a little bit of

everything.

Always Pay Attention to

Detail: Your corporate outfit

should be well pressed and devoid

of any stains or dents. If it has one

thing someone can point out to

correct, then the entire outfit and

purpose are ruined.

Use the Right Colours:

Always make sure that the colours

are appropriate for the outfit and for

the occasion. When in doubt, obey

the golden rule by sticking to a white

or black outfit – you can never go

wrong with this.

Wear the Right Shoes: What

is a good corporate outfit without

the right type of shoes? You should

always wear closed-toe shoes and

resist the temptation to wear slippers

or open-toe shoes.

Research-Based

TIPS TO PREVENT

CANCER

Word By Glory Uyi

All over the world, October is set

aside for breast cancer awareness.

It will be a play on words to say

cancer has become ‘a cancer’ in our

world today – but that is the truth.

Within the last decade, cases of cancer

appear to have skyrocketed, although

medical experts claim the disease has

been with us for far longer. They claim

that awareness, especially through the

online media has brought it to the fore –

which they also claim is good if the world

plans on winning the war against cancer.

Many things can cause cancer, and like

many other terminal diseases, it is easier

to prevent it than to cure. Interestingly,

cancer can be prevented by simple

healthy habits and research has proven

that those who adopt basic eating and

healthy procedures lower their risks of

cancer.

However, this is not to say that some

factors cannot be subdued, for example,

age and family history. But it is better

than do your part and reduce the

chances of cancer rather than leaving

up your chances to fate.

Below, we have highlighted 10 researchbased

tips that can help us prevent

cancer. You will find out that these are

simple everyday tips that can go a long

way in making significant changes in the

cause of our lives.

Say

No to

Smoking

It is as easy as that

– or maybe not so

easy. But the truth

is that smoking is

the major reason

for lungs cancer.

Research has also shown that smoking can cause

cervical, bladder, mouth, and throat cancer.

If you are having issues quitting smoking, think of cancer

or watch videos of cancer patients online. If you want to

prevent cancer, you should run away from smoking.

Avoid Second Hand Smoke

You do not smoke, but you are always around someone (or

people) who smoke. Well, according to research, secondhand

smoke is as dangerous as smoking itself – perhaps even more

dangerous because you could get lungs cancer without ever

lifting a stick of cigarette to your lips.

HEALTH

Limit Your

Alcohol Intake

Alcohol increases the risks for liver, breast, throat,

and colorectal cancers. This is as simple as it

can get, the less you drink alcohol, the lower your

chances of cancer.

If you must drink, you should do so in moderation,

i.e. one drink per day for women and two for

Maintain Routine Medical

Check-Ups

When you maintain routine medical checkups, you

lower your risks of cancer by half.

One reason why a lot of people die from cancer is

that they often get informed late – at a time when

there is little or nothing that can be done. You should

choose a health care center with the necessary

equipment and diagnostic technologies that can

catch cancer at its earliest, most treatable stages.

Be More Physically Active

According to research, physical activity reduces

different types of cancer, like colon and breast

cancer. You should try to engage more in walking,

sports, yoga, or household chores – something to

keep you off on your feet.

According to the American Cancer Society, adults

are recommended to get at least 150 minutes of

moderate-intensity activity each week, while children

and teens should get at least 1 hour of moderateintensity

activity each week.

HEALTH

Eat More Vegetables

It is no news that our choice of food can increase or

reduce our chances of cancer. To be on the safer

side, always get vegetables or make them a significant

portion of your daily diet.

The American Cancer Society recommends that

eating a healthy diet, with an emphasis on vegetables

prevents the risks of cancer. You should take more

vegetables and fruits, and reduced the intake of

processed foods and meat.

Watch Your Weight

You need to consciously watch your weight if you

want to reduce your chances of cancer. Too much

weight – especially around your midsection area can

increase your chances of different types of cancers,

like breast and colon cancer.

Not to mention that being overweight also

significantly increases your chances of diabetes.

So, isn’t it best to consciously watch your weight and

reduce your chances of cancer – and diabetes?

Be on Your Feet More

According to recent studies, sitting too much – especially

on one spot can increase your chances of cancer. So if

you want to prevent cancer, you should stand up more.

Researchers advise that you should stand up and walk

around every two hours to help promote blood circulation

and prevent your chances of cancer.

Protect Your Skin

The ultra-violent ray from direct sunlight has been

discovered to be a cause of cancer. So, you should

protect yourself from direct sunlight more, if you want

to reduce your risks of cancer.

If you must be under the sun for tanning, you should

always apply sunscreen to reduce the effect of the

sun on your skin, to prevent your chances of having

cancer.

According to experts, when you’re in the sun, always

apply sunscreen to your skin that has at least a

sun protection factor (SPF) of 15. Some doctors

recommend at least SPF 30.
