H

ello there,

Yours truly is in a special

mood today. I feel so fulfilled,

and my heart is in a joyous

celebration as Glamsquad joins

family, friends, and associates to

celebrate Sisi Abah at 80.

Twenty years ago, during her 60th

birthday celebration, a biography

written by the Editor-in-Chief of

Glamsquad Magazine, Remi

Diagbare, was published in her

honour. So, you can see that to us, Sisi

Abah is family.

We have put together this edition

in her honour as it is our nature to

celebrate greatness, class, and

success.

To support the edition, we showcase

our pick of features that, in one way or

another, exemplify some of the finest

fashion, lifestyle, and entertainment

stories this country has to offer. One

of these – fashion, is what Sisi Abah

herself is most known for.

Of course, fashion isn’t all about the

big design houses, and no one should

ignore the importance of the smaller

but well-targeted enterprises that will

need to flourish in a multicultural world.

It is revelations like these that make

appreciating pioneers like Sisi Abah

even more worthy. Without her, Ankara

prints would perhaps not have the

international acceptance it has today.

In two features, we tried what we

could to introduce Sisi Abah to

those who may not know her

significance. We also refreshed

the memories of those who

were privileged to witness her

fashion revolution firsthand.

We also included features

from Serena Williams – who is

marking her exit from the tennis

world in grand fashion!

Pat McGrath also caught the

attention of our editors with her

new skincare product launched

in collaboration with Naomi

Campbell. Not forgetting the

new jewelry collection by Tiffany

and Co.

This is another interesting

edition from the stables of

Glamsquad magazine, which

we know you would love and

enjoy!

Yours Truly,

Ways To Rock

The Ankara

Look

By Kabirat Opoola

The Ankara fabric is popular,

especially in the African fashion

world. Over the years fashion

designers have come up with new

ways to incorporate the Ankara

fabric into a modernized outfit.

Gone are the days the Ankara

fabric is seen as a traditional

outfit alone. With the help of the

numerous glam styles available,

the fabric can be incorporated

into a corporate, casual, and glam

evening outfit.

The Ankara fabric is being worn for

different occasions and paired with

accessories to give it a new lease

of life.

Here are 3 ways to rock the Ankara

fabric

1

work

One of the latest fashion trends

is styling the Ankara fabric as a

corporate or business casual

outfit and rocking it to work in

a chic way. The Ankara fabric

has been modernized into

different smart and classy

outfits suitable to be worn as

corporate outfits. To rock the

Ankara fabric for work you can

decide to style the fabric;

Ankara Suit

The Ankara suit is one of the

ways the Ankara fabric can be

worn as a corporate or work

outfit. The suit can take the form

of a skirt and blazer or a trouser

and blazer depending on your

choice. Pair the Ankara suit with

a nice pair of heels to add some

spice to your appearance.

FASHION

Ankara Jumpsuit

To wear the Ankara fabric as a work

outfit, style the fabric into a palazzo

jumpsuit. The Ankara palazzo jumpsuit

is decent and classy to wear and also

gives an elegant appearance.

Ankara short

gown

Another way you can rock

the Ankara fabric as a work

outfit is to style it into a short

gown. The Ankara short

gown for work can be in the

form of a pencil gown or a

flared gown. Both styles are

interesting to be worn as

a work outfit. For work, the

Ankara short gown is best

paired with heels. However,

Sneakers and flat shoes can

be worn alongside the short

gown.

Ankara

is to style it as a three-quarter

Fashion

in the

Streets

of Lagos

– Ankara Fabrics and Style

Words by - Praise David

Gone – long gone are the

days when designers

and fashionistas

frowned at the mention

of Ankara! Thanks to legends

and pioneers like Sisi Abah, the

perception and acceptance of

Ankara fabrics changed globally.

Despite the efforts of Mama

Abah and many other Ankara

fashion enthusiasts like her, there

were times when critics argued

that Ankara would not be able to

compete on the global stage.

The reason for their assertion

was that corporate and street

fashion – which was becoming

the new face of fashion, would

knock out Ankara styles. They

had a point, though, because

before now, Ankara styles were

synonymous with only ceremonial

and traditional occasions. But

they were not right for long!

Have you heard of Ankara

street style? The term can be a bit

funny, but the truth is over 80% of

the styles seen around are Ankara

street styles.

We know that everything that

has ‘street’ on it comes from the

street. So basically, there are

different styles that we can get

from the street, ranging from

hipster to bohemian, that can

go with jackets or even flared

trousers.

Ankara has not disappointed

in its street-wise designs that are

found around the world. We don’t

dress to experiment in public.

Instead, we wear what we believe

is good for us. And when it comes

to Ankara street design, we have

some of the finest you can ever

see here.

INTERVIEW

Hajia Abah

Folawiyo:

Woman. Fashion Icon.

Trailblazer. Legend. Sisi Abah

By Ameena Daayo

My mother’s love for African prints was

my first introduction to Abah Folawiyo.

Indeed, it would be somewhat impossible

to separate the success of the Ankara

fabric from the sacrifices and hard work of Madam

Abah.

Who would have thought that many decades

down the line, I would be blessed with the

prestigious opportunity to edit an edition of my

favourite magazine in honour of Madam Abah –

a fashion icon who was greatly loved by my late

grandmother and mother?

I cannot be grateful enough to my editor-inchief

and the team at Glamsquad Magazine

for decorating me with smiles and pride as we

celebrate our own Sisi Abah.

July 22, 2022, would remain in the annals of

history, and all those who were opportune to be

present at the Ikoyi, Lagos residence of Hajia Abah

Folawiyo would live to tell the tale. It was the 80th

birthday celebration of Sisi Abah – as she is fondly

called, and everyone who is someone in the

Nigerian upper echelon was present to celebrate

with the mother of modern African fashion!

The crème de la crème of society was on

hand to celebrate with Hajia Abah Folawiyo as she

celebrated her 80th in grand style. She is the widow

of Chief Abdulwahab Iyanda Yinka Folawiyo, the

great industrialist and Baba Adinni of Nigeria, and

mother of Segun Awolowo – the former executive

director of the Nigerian Export Promotion Council.

Segun is the grandson of former Nigerian nationalist,

socialist, and statesman Chief Obafemi Awolowo.

Although her name is Hajia Abah Folawiyo, if you

want to strike a chord in a group and hear all the

‘oh’ and ‘ah,’ it is best to refer to her as Sisi Abah.

Funny right? But that is what she is fondly called.

Replying to a question by City People some years

ago, she explained how she got the nickname Sisi

Abah.

INTERVIEW

INTERVIEW

“My name is Abah because I was born on Thursday.

Those who are born on Thursdays in Ghana are

called Abah. In Ghana, they name their children by

the days they are born. I was born on Thursday so I

was given the name Abah.

“It is those in Lagos who chose to call me Sisi Abah,

because of my fashion style and the delicate way I

carry myself.”

Her Background

Sisi Abah is a Nigerian, but

she has strong Ghanaian roots.

She was born in 1942 into the

prestigious and noble Kuku

family in Ijebu Ode. Her mother

is a Ghanaian, and she was

brought up and educated in

both Ghana and Nigeria. She

is very close to her maternal

family in Ghana because she

grew up with them.

Her family in Ghana hails

from a renowned lineage

of remarkable dressmakers.

So, despite her relocation to

Nigeria, her love for fashion

remained. Her education in a

Convent School in Cape Coast,

Ghana, shaped her life which

she considers a conservative

one, despite her flamboyance,

popularity and celebrity status.

Early Steps to Stardom

Sisi Abah is reputed for her

expertise in fashion design and

sewing. She was the winner

of the first Daily Times Fashion

Designer Awards. She also won

the first Fashion Design Award

in Ghana organized by the

defunct Ghana Airways at the

launch of its first aircraft. Her

first trip abroad was to Beirut,

being the prize she won as the

winner of the Ghana Airways

competition.

A very talented woman,

Sisi Abah, for very many years,

had her own fashion house

situated in Surulere, Lagos,

which was known as Labanella.

She started the fashion house

with her friend Ornella, and this

led to the name of the fashion

house.

The fashion house was a

pioneer in its field and a very

successful brand. It became

even more successful when

then General Olusegun

Obasanjo, as Head of State,

banned the importation of

foreign clothes and materials.

Her business blossomed

and boomed as she took

advantage of the ban.

Although she has since retired,

she still designs and sews for a

select few.

Sisi Abah has gained

recognition from Nigerian

Fashion Designers. For a long

time, she was the National

President of the Fashion

Designers Association of Nigeria

(FADAN) and is now a life patron

of the Association.

Who is Sisi Abah?

The remarkable life of the

super socialite has always

been a subject of perpetual

fascination after establishing

herself in Nigeria as a fashion

icon to cheer. She is one

of the iconic names that

www.glamsquadmagazine.com 29

INTERVIEW

headlined the Nigerian fashion

industry back in the ‘70s and

‘80s, spearheading a fashion

revolution that embraced the

beauty of our local Ankara fabric

that has, today, become a

favourite of all.

As a result of her peerless

charm and remarkable

presence, Folawiyo leaves a

deep impression on everyone

she meets. Despite approaching

the eighth floor in the stage of

life, the grand dame is showing

no sign of slowing down.

A sneak peek into the life

of Sisi Abah…

The best way to fully know a

person is through what they say.

No one knows Sisi Abah more

than Sisi Abah herself!

What has life taught you

as a person?

To be happy within myself,

be calm and do whatever I can

do. Life is beautiful; it depends

on how you treat it. I think I have

treated it very well.

Glamsquad

Exclusive:

You are a style icon.

Labanella, your fashion

label, is a pioneer in

African prints. What’s

your take on fashion?

Fashion is booming more than

in our own time. Then, people

didn’t appreciate made in

Nigeria and that’s why I started

making clothes in prints. I never

stopped and all the designers in

Nigeria are all using prints.

Those days, they all used

imported fabrics until Obasanjo

banned imported clothes and

that’s when prints started thriving.

I started it, and I never stopped.

I’m so happy; during my time it’s

just sober prints I did but now they

30

www.glamsquadmagazine.com

INTERVIEW

have gone so wild. Nigerians and

Ghanaians are doing so well and

I appreciate their creativity.

What would you want

to be remembered for?

I want to be remembered as

the glamorous Sisi Abah. I love

dressing up, I love making my

clothes and I wear them. I want

to be remembered as the hardworking

Sisi Abah and fashionista

Sisi Abah because that is one

thing I will never stop being. I

want to be remembered as a

happy Sisi Abah. I’m happy with

everybody. I’m happy with every

pretty lady around.

I’m close to most of the

designers, and they all love me.

They always come to me, and

they make clothes for me. They

come to me and ask, “Sisi Abah,

can we dress you up?” and I say

yes. When people admire me at

events, I tell them the name of

the designer that made the outfit.

I do credit all the designers that

styled me.

They appreciate me, and

I really appreciate them too.

Budding designers are working

hard, and the sky is their limit

because I worked hard too, and

I’m still working now. I still have

a few customers I make clothes

for. They won’t let me go. I still

make dresses for them but not as

many as I used to when I had my

factory.

How do you relax?

I relax by watching Nigerian

movies both English and Yoruba. I

love watching Ghanaian movies

too. My granddad is from Ghana.

They send their movies to me,

and I buy them in the market too.

When I don’t go out, I relax on

my couch, and watch movies till

I sleep. Occasionally, I go out to

parties with my friends. You know

www.glamsquadmagazine.com 31

INTERVIEW

I have a lot of friends, but I don’t

just go to any party. I attend my

close friends’ parties.

You are a real traveler.

Where is your favorite

holiday spot?

When you say I like traveling

around, I don’t. I don’t travel

around often. I used to travel

when my husband was around

because he used to go

everywhere. We went on cruises.

We visited South of France,

America, and Dubai; everywhere

because my husband liked

traveling and I went with him

wherever he went.

These days, I do travel

occasionally maybe once a

year. I visit my relatives in Ghana

and Cotonou but I haven’t been

to America in three years now.

I traveled to London last year.

I travel when it’s necessary. I

have seen it all, my dear. There’s

nowhere I haven’t been abroad.

Nowhere. When I was younger,

I loved traveling, and maybe

because I’m getting old that

passion is waning but I have seen

it all, thank God.

What’s your dress

sense?

I love trouser suits and long

dresses. I’m a Muslim, so I don’t

show off my body. I wear elegant

things that will complement my

religion. I was covering my hair

before I became a Muslim and I

think it’s elegant and nice.

I don’t expose my hair. For

many years, I didn’t wear long

hair; I just wear my Afro hair.

Thereafter, I started tying turban;

I have been tying turban now

for how long? I’m happy people

love using turban today to

complement their dressing. I

thank God for all that.

Are you a shoes freak?

I’m not too forcy about shoes.

I wear simple shoes. Once I see

a pair that complements my

dressing, that’s fine by me. Not

that I will look for purple shoes

because I’m wearing purple

dress, or green shoes because

I’m wearing a green dress.

When I have black shoes,

which matches anything, I wear

them. I can use a bag for two

weeks before changing it. I don’t

care.

We love and wish Sisi

Abah many more years

filled with celebrations

and testimonies, amen.

Joan

Collins

Remains Strong, Healthy,

Fashionable, and Stylish at 89

By Chioma Esiu

Dame Joan Henrietta

Collins DBE, fondly known

as Joan Collins, is an

English actress, author, and

columnist. She is the recipient of

several accolades, including a

Golden Globe Award, a People’s

Choice Award, two Soap Opera

Digest Awards, and a Primetime

Emmy Award nomination. In

1983, she was awarded a star

on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

Born on 23 May 1933 in

Paddington, London, United

Kingdom, Joan continues to exude

beauty and style, even as she is set

to celebrate her 90th birthday in a

few months.

When speaking recently about

her age, the mother of three was

quoted as saying, ‘people have

been calling me an older woman

since I was 38!’ She reveals she still

feels forty as age is ‘not important,

and it’s about ‘how you look, feel

and behave.’

In a new interview to accompany

her gorgeous Saga Magazine

cover shoot, Joan Collins has

revealed she still thinks of herself

as a 40-year-old. However, she

said age is irrelevant since her

focus lies with how she ‘looks,

feels, and behaves and believes

asking a woman her age to be

‘tremendously rude.’

She told the publication: ‘My

mother’s generation never did it.

But you know, people have been

34

www.glamsquadmagazine.com

calling me an older woman since I was 38.

“I think it’s utterly ridiculous that powerful,

resilient women are portrayed as dangerous,

whereas in my experience it’s the predatory

men who are the real threat.”

Joan will celebrate her 20th wedding

anniversary with her husband Percy Gibson,

57, later this year and gushed about how

‘lucky’ she is to have the producer in her life.

She said: ‘He takes care of everything.

He takes care of my children and all our

finances. He’s the love of my life. It’s a great

marriage, a great relationship.

“Of course, we have our little spats like other

couples might do, but we’ve both got our

safe spaces. He has his office at home, I

have my walk-in closet. We’re really lucky. I

realise most people can’t have separate

bathrooms.”

The American Horror Story star is set to take on

the role of Wallis Simpson for an upcoming

project, In Bed with the Duchess, which may

become a film or TV series.

She said: “I play the Duchess of Windsor from

the time that the Duke died right up until her

death. It’s a fabulous story.”

All You Need to Know About

Camilla,

Queen Consort of

the United Kingdom

By Amenna Daayo

As the wife of King Charles

III, Camilla Rosemary

Shand is now Queen

consort of the United Kingdom

and 14 other Commonwealth

realms as the wife of King

Charles III. Camilla was

raised in East Sussex and

South Kensington in England

and educated in England,

Switzerland, and France.

She was born on 17 July 1947

at the King’s College Hospital,

London, United Kingdom, and

aged 75 years. But who really is

Camilla, and what does it mean

to be a Queen consort? You

will find out this and more in this

article.

Following the death of Queen

Elizabeth II at the age of 96, her

son Prince Charles took over the

throne and was ordained, King

Charles III. This means that his

wife Camilla will be crowned

Queen Consort.

This also means that the King’s

wife of seventeen years,

Camilla (previously known as

the Duchess of Cornwall), will

now become Queen Consort.

Before she died, Queen

Elizabeth II announced in

February 2022 that it was her

“sincere wish” that Camilla

would receive the title of

Queen Consort when Charles

became King – and that the

public would support that

decision.

In a public statement, Her

Majesty said, “When, in the

fullness of time, my son Charles

becomes King, I know you will

36

www.glamsquadmagazine.com

give him and his wife Camilla

the same support that you have

given me. It is my sincere wish

that, when that time comes,

Camilla will be known as Queen

Consort as she continues her

own loyal service.”

But what does Queen Consort

actually mean? And what will

Camilla’s duties be in her new

role?

In the nonstop media coverage

since Queen Elizabeth II died last

week, Camilla has been almost

constantly in the public eye.

She seems to have little interest

in being the center of attention

herself, preferring to stand just to

the side.

Camilla and Charles have lived

in the intertwined world of the

British upper crust for their entire

lives. They met at a polo match

in 1970 and began dating.

When Charles left to serve in the

Navy in 1972 without asking for

any commitment from Camilla,

she didn’t wait.

The next year, she married

Andrew Parker Bowles, an

aristocrat seven years her

senior, who had been a page

at Queen Elizabeth II’s 1953

coronation and played polo with

Charles when they were young.

What is Queen Consort?

The title essentially means

the wife of a reigning King.

The spouse of a King doesn’t

become Queen, as the title of

Queen is only used for a reigning

female monarch. Instead, the

wife of a monarch is given the

official title of Queen Consort.

Similarly, the husband of a

reigning Queen does not

become King. They are offered

the title of Prince Consort.

However, Queen Elizabeth II’s

husband, the Duke of Edinburgh,

rejected that moniker.

When Charles and Camilla

married in 2005, it was stated

that Camilla would take the

title of Princess Consort when

the time came, thought to be

due to the public holding a

somewhat negative perception

of her (due to her alleged affair

with King Charles during his

marriage to Princess Diana).

However, that changed when

Queen Elizabeth II gave her

blessing for Camilla to become

Queen Consort earlier this year.

The former Duchess of Cornwall

will be crowned Queen Consort

at the coronation of King Charles

III. A date has not been set for

the coronation yet, but it is likely

to happen in 2023.

She will be known as ‘Queen

Camilla’ and referred to as ‘Her

Majesty’.

What are the duties of a

Queen Consort?

While the reigning King or Queen

has official responsibilities

relating to the government, the

Queen Consort does not.

As Queen Consort, Camilla’s

role will be to support Charles

as King, including appearing

at public engagements and

attending charity events.

As the wife of a monarch,

Camilla will also become a

Counsellor of State. These are

senior members of the Royal

Family who can carry out duties

on behalf of the King if he is

unwell or overseas.

What did King Charles say

about Camilla in his speech?

In his first address to the nation

as King, the new monarch said

that during this “time of change,”

he would “count on the loving

help” of his “darling wife.”

He explained that she would

become his Queen Consort

“In recognition of her own

loyal public service” since they

married 17 years ago.

He added: “I know she will bring

to the demands of her new role

the steadfast devotion to duty

on which I have come to rely so

much.”

Tiffany & Co.

Unveils Its First

All-Gender Jewelry

Collection, Tiffany Lock

Praise David

No rules. All welcome.” That’s

the spirit behind the newest

Tiffany & Co. Lock collection,

debuted four all-gender bracelets.

Tiffany Lock arrives as an audacious

symbol of togetherness and

inclusivity. The brand’s first genderneutral

jewelry collection embodies

the personal bonds that bring us

together and make us who we are.

The collection draws from the

archives to re-envision the symbolic

idea of the padlock. Distinctive and

modern, the sleek bangles feature

an innovative swiveling mechanism

that echoes the functionality of a

padlock and took over one year to

develop.

“Tiffany Lock is an elegant

interpretation of an archival

functional design,” said Alexandre

Arnault, Executive Vice President,

Product and Communication,

Tiffany & Co. “Defined by modern,

clean lines and a breakthrough

clasp mechanism, Tiffany Lock

represents an exciting new pillar

to our diamond and gold jewelry

offering. We are thrilled to unveil our

latest icon.”

Founded in 1837, Tiffany & Co.

produced functional padlocks until

the 1950s, when it adopted an

aesthetic purpose as everything

from key rings to necklaces featured

design elements evoking padlocks.

The padlock motif’s evolution over

the last 20 years is especially seen

in collections like Return to Tiffany®

and Tiffany HardWear.

Are you as “locked in” on this new

collection as we are? Here’s how

to open and close a Tiffany Lock

bracelet in three simple steps:

Step 1: Locate the notch indicated

by a small indent on one side of the

bracelet.

Step 2: Gently pull outward from

either side of the notch and

bracelet will swivel open.

Step 3: Place the bracelet on your

wrist. Using your wrist for tension,

carefully pull from the notch again,

swivel the two ends together and

release to close the bracelet.

The four 18k Tiffany Lock bracelets

range in price from $6,800 to

$32,000 and can be found in

different combinations of white

gold, yellow gold, rose gold, and

pavé diamonds.

Too expensive or not? What are

The Future Of

Sustainable Fas

By Chioma Esiu

& Sophie Benson

What would a sustainable fashion

future actually look like?

A pandemic, wildfires, floods, droughts,

the prospect of unlivable conditions within

the next 50 years, and a climate change

report which signalled “code red for

humanity” mean Glasgow’s COP26 is a

crucial moment in humanity’s future. But

fashion, which if it were a nation state would

rank at the 7th largest economy in the

world, has been glaringly absent from the

conversation.

To redress the balance,

signatories from the fashion

industry including Fashion

Revolution, Centre for Sustainable

Fashion, New Standard

Institute, and Labour Behind

the Label have united in a call

to action, asking the world’s

leaders to commit to five key

recommendations.

The prompts? “Collective

action to achieve net zero

emissions by no later than

2050; resourcefulness in waste

elimination; increase responsibility

by businesses towards their global

supply chains; support skills

development in education to

encourage children to learn

the necessary skills to make,

repair and reuse their clothes;

and frame any solutions to the

climate emergency around

business models which shift

the focus from profit and loss,

to a just transition towards the

well-being economy”.

We’ve had a significant

taste of what lies ahead

if governments fail to act,

but what might the fashion

industry of the future look like

if the call to action inspired

leaders to actually lead?

making environmental targets for

Textiles 2030 initiative.

As the government prepared

to host COP26, all carbon targets

and initiatives, including the

UN’s Fashion Industry Charter for

Climate Change remain voluntary

and brands continue to make

impressive-sounding sustainability

declarations that don’t begin to

make a dent in the climate crisis.

However when the Green Claims

Code comes into force in 2022,

brands find it increasingly difficult

to make unfounded, sweeping

environmental claims. With the

Climate Clock striking seven years

until the window for action to limit

warming to 1.5 degrees closes,

and consumer scrutiny at an alltime

high, brands begin to sign up

to standards and initiatives to win

back trust, including the Science

Based Targets Initiative net-zero

corporate standard. All targets

must be aligned with the goal of

this 1.5 degrees – there’s no more

tolerance for anything less.

“As the government prepared

to host COP26, all carbon targets

and initiatives, including the

UN’s Fashion Industry Charter for

Climate Change remain voluntary

and brands continue to make

impressive-sounding sustainability

declarations that don’t begin to

make a dent in the climate crisis”

The joint effect of the Green

Claims Code and the need to

make science-based targets

mean offsetting, often in the form

of planting trees, no longer cuts

it. But voluntary action allows fast

fashion overproducers to drag

their heels so governments, finally,

step in. A coalition of the biggest

fashion consuming nations lay

down a plan: coal-fired heat

and power generation must be

phased out within three years, and

virgin polyester must go within ten.

Tax reforms reward companies

who design products with lower

environmental impacts and

penalise those who don’t, and

incentives are offered for brands

investing in regenerative farming

to restore biodiversity and reduce

land pressure.

By 2040, the UK has an

appointed Fashion Minister. A

switch to renewables is mandated

and carbon reports across the

entire supply chain must be made

public. The message is clear:

brands no longer make their own

rules.

DECARBONISING THE

INDUSTRY

By 2016, the

apparel and footwear

industries accounted for

approximately 8 per cent

of global greenhouse

gas (GHG emissions). In

2019, the UK government

passed a law to bring all

GHG emissions to net zero

by 2050. But the same

month, it rejected every

recommendation made

in the Environmental Audit

Committee’s Fixing Fashion

report which included

www.glamsquadmagazine.com 49

WASTE NOT

In 2017, less than 1 per cent of

material used to produce clothing

was recycled into new clothing.

Meanwhile brands were destroying

unsold stock and sending billions

of pounds worth of returns to

landfill, while consumers continued

to throw clothes in the bin.

Designers attempted to fix the

problem. 2019 saw the launch of

fully circular shoe brand Thousand

Fell who joined the likes of Nudie

Jeans, Helen Kirkum, and Duran

Lantink in embracing the circular

economy, but the linear ‘takemake-waste’

system continued to

drive fashion. By 2020, the industry

was producing over 100 billion

garments per year, and countries

in the Global South, like Ghana,

were flooded with cast-offs from

the Global North, the quality so low

that 40 per cent of it went straight

to landfill. The same year, France

introduced an anti-waste law

which prevented the destruction

of unsold items, and in 2021 the

Repairability Index was introduced,

meaning manufacturers had to

rate their electrical products out

of ten on how easy they were to

repair.

A shift towards Extended

Producer Responsibility and an

EU directive for members to set

up separate textile collections

by 2025 floods the secondhand

textile market as existing

infrastructure isn’t prepared for

the volume of clothes consumers

throw away to make room for new.

A series of import bans echo the

plastic import bans from the likes

of Turkey and China earlier in the

decade, and manufacturers find

themselves lumbered with the

waste they created.

“By 2020, the fashion industry

was producing over 100 billion

garments per year, and countries

in the Global South, like Ghana,

were flooded with cast-offs from

the Global North, the quality so low

that 40 per cent of it went straight

to landfill”

Revisiting recommendations

made to the previous

administration, a new government

takes action: a sliding scale levy

on each garment made, ranging

from 2p per garment to 8p for

higher volumes, used to fund

recycling innovation and circular

design education. It quickly adds

up for the brands producing

millions of garments and the effect

takes hold: selling lots of clothes

at low prices makes way for selling

less at a higher price tag.

After extended campaigning

from the Right to Repair

movement, 2035 sees the

introduction of fashion guarantees,

with brands obliged to offer free

repairs for up to three years after

purchase. Unravelling seams,

broken zips, missing buttons, and

frays can all be repaired ondemand.

Keen to avoid the levy

for producing new garments and

monetise their new consumer

repairs infrastructure, brands

began to utilise the service

model, as developed by Professor

Rebecca Earley. Designed for

disassembly, garments are bought

on contract, much like phones.

When they’re worn out or out of

style, consumers can return them

to be overprinted, restructured,

and, eventually when reworks are

no longer possible, turned into

smaller pieces such as bags and

accessories.

TAKING RESPONSIBILITY

A lethal factory collapse in

2013, and a complete absolution

of liability to pay garment worker

wages during COVID-19 illustrated

how the fashion industry had

shirked responsibility for those within

its supply chain.

Signed in May 2013 and

renewed in 2018, The Accord

on Fire and Building Safety in

50

www.glamsquadmagazine.com

Bangladesh helped to identify 87,000 safety

issues and eliminate over 90 per cent of them.

At risk of disappearing when it came up for

renewal in 2021, after extended campaigning

a new International Accord was created, with

the rules stating it must expand into at least one

country outside Bangladesh within 26 months.

The same year, the EU announced mandatory

legislation on due diligence to ensure “respect

for human rights and the environment

throughout the entire supply chain”.

“A lethal factory collapse in 2013, and a

complete absolution of liability to pay garment

worker wages during COVID-19illustrated how

the fashion industry had shirked responsibility for

those within its supply chain. Signed in May 2013

and renewed in 2018, The Accord on Fire and

Building Safety in Bangladesh helped to identify

87,000 safety issues and eliminate over 90 per

cent of them”

By 2023, the due diligence legislation is

being adopted by member states. Brands must

identify suppliers, even those outside of Europe,

and take responsibility for any harm caused to

workers – or the environment – and make sure

that any victims have access to legal remedies

like compensation. In 2025, California’s Garment

Worker Protection Act, which ensures hourly

wages rather than payment by the garment, is

expanded to New York.

After a fed-up buyer shares a recording of a

colleague talking down a supplier from £3.70

to £3.19 per unit just before Christmas 2029,

#StoptheSqueeze protesters gather outside

the headquarters of fast fashion giants on New

Year’s Day, demanding they stop driving down

prices and squeezing garment worker wages.

Campaigners call on the government to ring

fence labour costs in production orders to

ensure workers receive a living wage, and a

new administration adopts the policy: garment

worker pay must be accounted for in order

prices. Ruthless haggling is out.

By 2037, the Accord is implemented in

Vietnam, Pakistan, India, Cambodia, and

Sri Lanka. Once brands could cut ties with

problematic supplier factories, tweet an apology

and move on, but now they are on the hook,

legally, for safety inspections, training, and

corrective action in all their major manufacturing

hubs.

Serena

Williams Says

Farewell to

Tennis On Her

Own Terms

- And In Her Own Words

By Serena Williams

As Told To Rob Haskell

This morning, my daughter,

Olympia, who turns five

this month, and I were

on our way to get her a

new passport before a trip to

Europe. We’re in my car, and

she’s holding my phone, using

an interactive educational app

she likes. This robot voice asks

her a question: What do you

want to be when you grow up?

She doesn’t know I’m listening,

but I can hear the answer she

whispers into the phone. She

says, “I want to be a big sister.”

Olympia says this a lot, even

when she knows I’m listening.

Sometimes before bed, she

prays to Jehovah to bring her a

baby sister. (She doesn’t want

anything to do with a boy!) I’m

the youngest of five sisters myself,

and my sisters are my heroes, so

this has felt like a moment I need to

listen very carefully to.

Believe me, I never wanted to

have to choose between tennis

and a family. I don’t think it’s fair. If

I were a guy, I wouldn’t be writing

this because I’d be out there

playing and winning while my wife

was doing the physical labor of

expanding our family. Maybe I’d be

more of a Tom Brady if I had that

opportunity. Don’t get me wrong: I

love being a woman, and I loved

every second of being pregnant

with Olympia. I was one of those

annoying women who adored

being pregnant and was working

until the day I had to report to the

hospital—although things got super

complicated on the other side.

And I almost did do the impossible:

A lot of people don’t realize that I

was two months pregnant when I

won the Australian Open in 2017.

But I’m turning 41 this month, and

something’s got to give.

I’ve been reluctant to admit that

I have to move on from playing

tennis. It’s like a taboo topic. It

comes up, and I start to cry. I think

the only person I’ve really gone

there with is my therapist

I have never liked the word

retirement. It doesn’t feel like a

modern word to me. I’ve been

thinking of this as a transition, but

I want to be sensitive about how

I use that word, which means

something very specific and

important to a community of

people. Maybe the best word to

describe what I’m up to is evolution.

I’m here to tell you that I’m evolving

away from tennis, toward other

things that are important to me.

A few years ago I quietly started

Serena Ventures, a venture capital

firm. Soon after that, I started a

family. I want to grow that family.

But I’ve been reluctant to admit

to myself or anyone else that I

have to move on from playing

tennis. Alexis, my husband, and I

have hardly talked about it; it’s like

a taboo topic. I can’t even have

this conversation with my mom

and dad. It’s like it’s not real until

you say it out loud. It comes up,

I get an uncomfortable lump in

my throat, and I start to cry. The

only person I’ve really gone there

with is my therapist! One thing I’m

not going to do is sugarcoat this.

I know that a lot of people are

excited about and look forward to

retiring, and I really wish I felt that

way. Ashleigh Barty was number

one in the world when she left the

sport this March, and I believe

she really felt ready to move on.

Caroline Wozniacki, who is one

of my best friends, felt a sense of

relief when she retired in 2020.

LIVING LEGENDS

Praise to these people, but I’m

going to be honest. There is no

happiness in this topic for me. I

know it’s not the usual thing to say,

but I feel a great deal of pain.

It’s the hardest thing that I could

ever imagine. I hate it. I hate that

I have to be at this crossroads.

I keep saying to myself, I wish it

could be easy for me, but it’s not.

I’m torn: I don’t want it to be over,

but at the same time I’m ready

for what’s next. I don’t know how

I’m going to be able to look at

this magazine when it comes out,

knowing that this is it, the end of

a story that started in Compton,

California, with a little Black girl

who just wanted to play tennis.

This sport has given me so much.

I love to win. I love the battle.

I love to entertain. I’m not sure

every player sees it that way, but

I love the performance aspect of

it—to be able to entertain people

week after week. Some of the

tennis court, and I couldn’t have

been more than 18 months.

Unlike Venus, who’s always been

stoic and classy, I’ve never been

one to contain my emotions. I

remember learning to write my

alphabet for kindergarten and

not doing it perfectly and crying

all night. I was so angry about it.

I’d erase and rewrite that A over

and over, and my mother let me

stay up all night while my sisters

were in bed. That’s always been

me. I want to be great. I want to

be perfect. I know perfect doesn’t

exist, but whatever my perfect was,

I never wanted to stop until I got it

right.

To me that’s kind of the essence

of being Serena: expecting the

best from myself and proving

people wrong. There were so

many matches I won because

something made me angry or

someone counted me out. That

drove me. I’ve built a career on

channeling anger and negativity

and turning it into something good.

My sister Venus once said that

when someone out there says you

can’t do something, it is because

they can’t do it. But I did do it. And

so can you.

POWER PLAYER

If you watched King Richard,

then you know that when I was

little, I was not very good at tennis.

I was so sad when I didn’t get all

the early opportunities that Venus

got, but that helped me. It made

me work harder, turning me into

a savage fighter. I’d travel to

tournaments with Venus as her

hitting partner, and if there was an

open slot, I’d play. I followed her

60

around the world and watched her.

When she lost, I understood why,

and I made sure I wouldn’t lose

the same way. That’s how I started

to move so fast up the rankings,

because I learned the lessons

from Venus’s losses instead of the

hard way, from my own. It was as

if I were playing her matches, too.

I’m a good mimic. Growing up I

tried to copy Pete Sampras. I loved

Monica Seles, and then I studied

Monica Seles. I watched, I listened,

then I attacked. But if I hadn’t been

in Venus’s shadow, I would never

be who I am. When someone said

I was just the little sister, that’s when

I got really fired up.

I started playing tennis with the

goal of winning the U.S. Open. I

didn’t think past that. And then I just

kept winning. I remember when I

passed Martina Hingis’s grand slam

count. Then Seles’s. And then I tied

Billie Jean King, who is such an

inspiration for me because of how

she has pioneered gender equality

in all sports. Then it was climbing

over the Chris Evert–Martina

Navratilova mountain. There are

people who say I’m not the GOAT

because I didn’t pass Margaret

Court’s record of 24 grand slam

titles, which she achieved before

the “open era” that began in 1968.

I’d be lying if I said I didn’t want that

record. Obviously I do. But day to

day, I’m really not thinking about

her. If I’m in a grand slam final,

then yes, I am thinking about that

record. Maybe I thought about it

too much, and that didn’t help.

The way I see it, I should have had

30-plus grand slams. I had my

chances after coming back from

giving birth. I went from a C-section

to a second pulmonary embolism

to a grand slam final. I played while

breastfeeding. I played through

postpartum depression. But I

didn’t get there. Shoulda, woulda,

coulda. I didn’t show up the way

I should have or could have. But

I showed up 23 times, and that’s

fine. Actually it’s extraordinary. But

these days, if I have to choose

between building my tennis résumé

and building my family, I choose

the latter.

QUEEN OF THE COURT

Earlier in my career, I never

thought about having kids. There

were times when I’ve wondered if I

should ever bring kids into this world,

with all its problems. I was never

that confident or comfortable

around babies or children, and

I figured that if I ever did have a

baby, I would have people taking

care of it 24/7. I’m not going

to lie—I definitely have a lot of

support. But I’m also an incredibly

hands-on mother. My husband will

tell you I am too hands-on. In five

years, Olympia has only spent one

24-hour period away from me. This

past year, while I was recovering

from a hamstring injury, I got to

pick her up from school four or

five days a week, and I always

looked forward to seeing her

face light up when she walked

out of the building and saw me

waiting there for her. The fact is

that nothing is a sacrifice for me

when it comes to Olympia. It all

just makes sense. I want to teach

her how to tie her shoes, how to

read, where babies come from,

and about God. Just like my

mom taught me. As she grows,

it’s something different every

month. Lately she’s been into

watching baking shows, which

we do together. Now we bake

with Play-Doh, which is so much

fun. She loves this game called

The Floor Is Lava, where you

have to do whatever you can to

avoid touching the ground. I love

setting up my gym for the game,

arranging my step-up boxes and

weight machines like an obstacle

course. Whatever she likes, I like.

MOTHER LOVE

“I’m an incredibly hands-on

mother. Nothing is a sacrifice

when it comes to Olympia. It

all just makes sense.” Danielle

Frankel gown.

I think tennis, by comparison,

has always felt like a sacrifice—

though it’s one I enjoyed making.

When you’re younger, you see

kids having fun, and you want to

do that stuff but you know you

have to be on the court, hoping

that one day it will all pay off. I

got pushed hard by my parents.

Nowadays so many parents

say, “Let your kids do what they

want!” Well, that’s not what got

me where I am. I didn’t rebel

as a kid. I worked hard, and I

followed the rules. I do want to

push Olympia—not in tennis, but

in whatever captures her interest.

But I don’t want to push too hard.

I’m still trying to figure out that

balance.

Keeping Fit & Active:

Top 5

Exercises

for Women

By Dr Nkechi Juliet

Stepping into a gym can be

intimidating when you’re not

sure where to start. It can

seem even more daunting

when you want to incorporate

strength training and the weights

sections of your gym are crowded

with muscley guys who are grunting

and throwing dumbbells on the

ground.

But building muscle has many

healthy benefits, including helping

you burn more fat and calories

at rest, making you stronger for

everyday activities, and possibly

even preserving brain health.

1

Squat

Another great compound movement

for overall strength and boosting your

metabolism is the squat. Though it’s

usually deemed a “leg” exercise, the

squatactually offers many benefits for

your entire body, including your core!

If you’re worried about stressing

your back with the squat, there are

variations that put less pressure on

the spine like the front squat or goblet

squat.

To start, use a dumbbell to

perform the goblet squat and

work up to using a barbell.

To make sure you’re limber

enough to squat, check out,

“How To Properly Warm Up For

Squats: Increase Flexibility And

Strength.”

Deadlift

The deadlift may be the

single-best movement

for increasing your overall

strength. Think about it, what

could be more functional

than lifting a heavy weight

off the ground?

As a compound movement

(a lift involving two or more

joints) that works more than

one major muscle group,

Mufdi truly believes that the

deadlift is the one exercise

that should be a part of

everyone’s workout routine.

Not only will the deadlift

work your hips, glutes, backs

and legs, but it will also help

boost your metabolism.

3

Weighted Hip Thrusts

Warning! You will get stares from people with this

movement. However, once you get over the

embarrassment and begin to see the difference this

movement makes in your body, you will love it.

By performing the weighted hip thrusts, your glutes

will become stronger, and you will see major

improvements in your other lifts. Hip thrusts target the

glutes in a completely different way than a squat or

deadlift. In those movements, the glutes are used

to help the lift whereas in a hip thrust the glutes are

isolated.

The benefits of isolating the glutes are not only to

strengthen them. Glute activation will help your other

lifts and of course, round out that booty

Looking to build beautiful

sculpted shoulders and arms

while working the rest of your

body as well? You’ve come to

the right place!

Standing while performing

the overhead press assists in

developing your core and

stabilizer muscles in your trunk.

Try this move with dumbbells

first then graduate to the

olympic bar. You’ll be sure to

get noticed for being such a

badass.

4

Kettlebell Swing

Lastly, although the kettlebell swing exercise may

seem out of place on this list, it is one of Mufdi’s

favorite exercises to add to a workout as a

“finisher.”

Not only is the kettlebell swing a complete body

workout, it doubles as cardio as well.

For starters, swings help strengthen the deep abdominal

muscle that traditional crunches simply can’t. KB swings also do

a fantastic job of defining your backand shouldermuscles while

providing your cardiovascular conditioning. This means you’re

burning fat in the process.

5

Don’t believe me? Pick up a fairly heavy kettlebell and start swinging.

You’ll find your heart rate and breathing start to speed up!

Do swings in 20-30 second working intervals while resting for the

same amount of time before repeating. Give these a shot and let us

A STEP BY

STEP GUIDE

ON HOW TO

DO MAKEUP

LIKE A PRO

By Sasha Bokamoso & Karan Dalvi

Learning how to do makeup

is an art that has been,

for thousands of years, an

essential component of the

entire beauty process.

The people of Ancient Egypt,

Greece, Rome, Sumer, the

Indus valley, and a host of other

civilizations, both men and

women, across the timeline of

history, right through the Middle

Ages to the present period,

have been privy to this art of

enhancing one’s appearance

through the aesthetic

application of cosmetics.

In this century and the previous,

however, the ideas of natural

makeup and inner beauty, sans

any makeup, were posited

by the feminist movement in

different parts of the world,

terming the use of cosmetics as

a form of enforced notions of

femininity.

With makeup, as with all other

forms of art, there is no right

order to go about it. Some

prefer doing their eyes before

the rest of their face, some

other areas. However, one

suggestion that most makeup

experts would agree to, is to

cover those regions first that

are often the most difficult

and tend to take up the most

amount of time in the entire

application process. Another

rather efficacious tip would be

learning how to do makeup

so as to better achieve the

desired look, and with minimal

inconveniences.

Read on as we bring to you

a step by step guide, on how

to do makeup in the quickest

and most convenient manner

possible and all you’ve to do, is

to follow the steps given below.

Step 1

Moisturiser

and Primer

It is of the utmost importance

that your face is moisturised

and well hydrated before you

apply any makeup onto it. A

hydrating cream, in this regard,

works excellently since it even

helps all the following products

blend into your skin better.

Then apply a primer, as it

not only helps your face stay

hydrated, it also

enables your

makeup to stay on

for much longer.

64

BEAUTY

Step

Apply

Foundation

2

The foundation is one of the most essential

elements of your makeup since when

correctly applied, it can help provide

your face and neck regions with an

even-toned, natural appearance. Use a

foundation brush, preferably white-tipped,

to apply the foundation to your face.

Foundation, fundamentally, is of three

types viz. liquid, powder, and cream. For

those who do not wish to use too much of

it, it is recommended that you only apply

foundation to regions you wish to even out

and leave the rest of your face foundationfree.

It is also important that you blend it

well with the neck regions so that your face

makeup doesn’t come across as out of

place with your neck. A quick tip, you can

always use the primer to break down the

opaque foundation makeup so as to make

it appear clearer and blend better.

Step

3

Concealing with

a Concealer

Just about everyone thinks they’ve

got certain flaws with their face,

especially with regards to dark circles.

And while accepting one’s flaws

is a great thing to do, concealing

them doesn’t really make you overtly

vain either. The second step of how

to do makeup, is learning to apply

The Time for Eye

Makeup

Some prefer to do the eye

makeup before the blush,

contour and highlight routine but

it works just as well towards the

end. Fill in your brows using an

eye pencil before moving on to

the eye shadow. Apply an eye

shadow shade of your choice

and then using a blending brush,

preferably a nice fluffy one, dust

a softer shade onto the crease

and blend outwards. Give your

concealer to the problem areas,

especially in the form of a triangle

below your eyes. This triangular

application helps conceal your dark

circles while making your skin appear

more naturally even toned and

drawing attention towards your eyes.

eye makeup the requisite finish

with eyeliner or mascara, using

a very fine tipped pencil for the

waterline and a stiff, angled

brush for the lids. The eyes are

one place where you can

really show off your creativity.

So go ahead and put your

creative cap on and don’t limit

yourself while learning how to do

makeup.

BEAUTY

Blush, Contour &

Highlight (BCH)

Step 4

Highlighting and contouring are quick, easy processes that

help in taking your makeup game to an altogether new

level. Apply the highlighter, cream or liquid based, to your

cheekbones, brow bones, on the Cupid’s bow and your chin

before you swipe the contour on your cheeks, forehead and

along the sides of your nose. Take care to ensure

that the contouring doesn’t get too muddy and

use an angled brush to blend it all in perfectly.

Apply the blush onto the apples

of your cheeks, extending

upwards to the temple

region. Between the blush,

contour and the highlighter,

different makeup experts

recommend different orders of

application. While learning how

to do makeup, use the order that

you’re most comfortable with

and one that is most apt for

the occasion. Some prefer

to apply the blush before the

highlighter, especially if the

blush is shimmery enough by

itself. If you’re using a powder

blush, do not ever apply it over

a liquid foundation since doing

so will cause streaks, making it

extremely difficult to blend in.

Luscious

Lips at

Last!

The lips makeup, with the

possible exception of the

eyes, are perhaps the most

noticed aspect of your

makeup. For a quick fix, apply

a red, rosy (or any colour of

your choice) lipstick using a

lip brush and you’re good

to go. If you’ve got more

time, covering the entirety of

your lips with a lip liner and

following up with a layer of

Step 6

liquid matte lipstick of the same

colour works wonders for your lips.

Finally, use a setting powder or spray

to help keep your makeup in place

for longer and you’re all set to paint

the town red.

5 Home-Made

Remedies for

Dark Spots,

According to a

Dermatologist

By Kristin Howard

Reviewed By Rhea

Souhleris Grous Esthetician

Soothe Skin and

Reduce Spots

with Almond Oil

Not everyone gets

them, but for those

that do, dark spots

on the face, chest, hands

or elsewhere on the body

can be seriously frustrating

to deal with as they don’t

go away on their own and

sometimes can’t be covered

by the average concealer.

So, what are these

discolorations, and why do

some people have them?

According to our experts, for

the most part, dark spots on

the skin can be attributed

to two causes: scarring

and hyperpigmentation

(technically, scarring

is post-inflammatory

hyperpigmentation).

Skin-strengthening ingredient

that’s used both in the kitchen

and on the complexion is

sweet almond oil, which

Engelman likes to use to

treat discolorations in the

skin. However, the almond oil

commonly used to cook isn’t

quite the same as that used

on the skin, which is often

fortified with additional vitamins

and minerals. “The presence

of Vitamin E and niacin help

with hyperpigmentation and

improving skin tone,” she says.

Because sweet almond oil

is generally viewed as noncomedogenic

(meaning it

won’t clog your pores) you

can add it to your nightly

routine as a makeup remover

or moisturizer meant to help

protect the skin barrier.

Brighten with

Yogurt

Another naturally skin-brightening item

you may already have in your home is

yogurt, which may work to fade dark spots

by exfoliating the skin. Like the chemically

exfoliating properties found in papaya,

yogurt may break down dead skin cells

thanks to lactic acid, which is found

naturally in dairy products: “Using a yogurt

BEAUTY

Exfoliate with Papaya

What’s a surefire way to brighten the

overall tone of your skin? Rinse away

that top layer with a natural exfoliant,

like papaya: “Papaya has fruit acids

known as alpha-hydroxy acids, which is

a chemical exfoliant,” says Engelman.

“AHAs are used for dry skin and to

anti-age, and works to improve skin

by removing the top layers of the skin

through weakening the lipids that bond

them together, thus, removing dull and

dead skin cells and revealing healthy

skin cells.

It is very effective in breaking down

skin cells and also increasing collagen

production because of the removal of

dead particles. Papaya specifically will

help brighten and give the skin a

youthful radiance.” To treat your dark

spots with papaya, simply mash ripe

papaya in a bowl and apply as a

mask to clean skin. When removing

the mask, you can also use gentle,

circular motions for a bit of added

exfoliation to that dead top layer of

skin cells.

Reverse Photo Damage

with Tomatoes

Rather than slather this ingredient on

your face, tomato works best when

taken systemically. According

to a 2011 study, participants

who ingested between around

55 milligrams of tomato

paste with olive oil per day

saw protection from acute

and long-term photo damage

brought on by UV rays4. Why is tomato

paste so effective? Tomatoes are

naturally rich in lycopene, which has

multiple potential health benefits,

including sun protection. Not a fan of

tomatoes? Look to other similarly-hued

fruits and veggies, like guava, pink

grapefruit, watermelon, and red sweet

peppers.

with cow’s milk could be effective

in calming the skin, since it has

lactic acid. Lactic acid is an AHA,

which improves discoloration and

age spots,” Engelman says. “This

acid is gentler on the skin than

other chemical exfoliants. Since

it is derived from dairy, it helps to

correct pH imbalances. It works

to improve tone, texture, and

reduces redness.”

Yogurt can be applied to clean

skin alone or mixed with additional

ingredients known to improve

the skin’s health—like honey—

which is antibacterial and great

for acne-prone complexions3.

Adding oatmeal to a yogurt mask

will help slough and soothe dry

skin, just be sure to rinse this mask

away carefully, as not to tear or

irritate the skin.

For ages, people in India, parts

of Central America, and other

subtropical areas have looked

to turmeric for its many healing

properties, from reducing

inflammation to aiding the digestive

process. Turmeric’s benefits also

extend to the area of skincare, and

it’s been shown to inhibit the skin’s

melanin production, which results in

spots due to hyperpigmentation. To

Use Turmeric to Even

Skin Tone

fade dark spots with turmeric, make

a mask using one part turmeric to

one part honey. If you wish, you

can enhance the lightening

process with a few drops of

lemon juice, as long as your skin

isn’t too sensitive, and the citrus

won’t come into contact with open

skin, like recently broken pimples.

KEY INGREDIENTS: Turmeric powder

is made from the root of Curcuma

zedoaria, a form of ginger native

to Southeast Asia. Its active

ingredient, curcumin, is what gives

it that yellow-orange tinge; it’s also

what makes it such a potent antiinflammatory.

Turmeric is also found

to lighten hyperpigmentation.

BEAUTY

Avoid being around

cigarette smoke

When tobacco is heated via

cigarettes — or even, yes,

vaping — it releases free radicals

that damage the DNA of skin

cells. This results in the breakdown

of collagen and elastin.

It also constricts blood vessels

which deplete the skin of much

needed oxygen, vitamins, and

nutrients. When that puff of toxic

smoke is exhaled it hits the skin

on the face and can cause

blackheads, particularly around

the mouth and cheek areas.

Natural Ways for Eve

Take Care of

By Sasha Bokamoso &

Lauren Park

Within the beauty industry and

on social media, there’s so much

emphasis on purchasing products. In

fact, so much so there’s a name for

it — beauty hauls — which basically

means showing off one’s shopping

spree of recently purchased products.

But products don’t solve all our skin

woes. If you’re tapped out with a

10-step skin care routine and still

finding yourself at loss, here are other

unbottled ways to take care of your

skin.

Drink water

While drinking water doesn’t directly

hydrate the skin it does help all of the

body systems function better.

It aids the liver in eliminating toxins from

the body, reduces puffiness, helps with

kidney function (which in turn helps dark

circles appear lighter), and may even

help skin conditions like psoriasis and

eczema.

How can you tell if you aren’t

drinking enough water? Check

your pee! If it’s a deep shade of

amber it’s time to drink up. The

color of lemonade is the goal.

70

www.glamsquadmagazine.com

BEAUTY

Limit your time in

the sun

Yes, use sunscreen but for

the non-product part of it: it’s

time to play hide and seek.

An estimated 90 percent

of skin aging is caused by

the sun, specifically for folks

with lighter skin (!), and not to

mention the even scarier risk

of skin cancer. Considering

that’s a pretty huge number,

it’s best to limit your sun

exposure or seek shade

when hanging out.

Don’t forget to protect your

eyes where you can’t apply

sunscreen too! Squinting

doesn’t exactly protect your

eyes and if you insist on

doing the peering exercise,

you may end up developing

more lines and wrinkles

around your eye and

forehead area.

Shower and wash your face with lukewarm

water (not hot!)

Sebum (oil) in our skin has a wax-like

consistency and using hot water to

wash our face or shower with essentially

“melts” the oil stripping the skin of muchneeded

moisture.

Lukewarm is best because it allows our

oils to warm up a bit allowing a proper

cleanse without completely stripping it.

Keep at massaging your skin for a full

minute to make the most out of your

cleanser!

ry Woman to

Her Skin

Sleep on a silk or

satin pillowcase

While you can’t rub a wrinkle

into your skin, you can cause

them while sleeping! If you’re

a side sleeper, you can be

smooshing your face into

your pillow, putting friction

between the skin and fabric.

This creates creases which

can result in wrinkles since we

sleep for a prolonged period

of time.

But if you sleep on a silk

pillowcase, the fabric allows

your skin to “slip,” minimizing

the chance of creating

wrinkles. It’s also great for

preventing frizzy hair!

www.glamsquadmagazine.com 71

Find ways to

manage stress

When we’re stressed or

anxious, our bodies release

a hormone called cortisol.

This hormone activates our

flight or fight response (which

is a good thing!) but constant

stress keeps this response on

fatigued overdrive (yep, a bad

thing).

Specifically to our skin,

increased levels of cortisol

can cause us to lose our

glow by diminishing the skin’s

ability to retain moisture

and encouraging an

overproduction of oils.

Opting out of sugar

Sometimes the skin takes a while to catch

up to how we felt or what we ate last week.

If your energy source is primarily added sugar

and refined carbohydrates, you might start seeing

the effects of that on your skin.

After all, too much of one thing strains the body and

skin. Too much exfoliating acids may strip your skin’s

protective barrier, just like too much sugar may cause a

surge in insulin (the hormone produced by the pancreas

that regulates the amount of sugar in the blood), and

inflammation.

Wash your makeup

brushes

Besides old makeup, of course,

bacteria, oil, dust, and sweat

accumulate on our makeup brushes.

If not cleaned regularly all that junk is

72

www.glamsquadmagazine.com

Don’t pick and don’t

touch your face

While it’s tempting to squeeze a pimple,

you can create a lot more lasting damage

to the skin than that instant gratification is

worth. First, there’s a type of acne called

acne mechanica, which is caused by

friction from touching the face and pushing

oil and bacteria back into the pore.

Secondly, picking and squeezing can

result in a scar or a brown spot called postinflammatory

hyperpigmentation. You may

prefer dealing with scarring over acne, but

it’s not an either or scenario. You can live

without both!

Exercise

essentially smeared around your face

during each makeup application.

This can cause inflammation,

clogged pores, and acne.

It’s best practice to clean your

makeup brushes weekly!

We all know that getting our sweat

on is great for our entire body, but it

also has some skin benefits as well.

When we move, we circulate our

blood which carries oxygen and

nutrients to all of our cells. Not only

does this provide an instant glow,

but it also helps our skin to repair

itself faster.

Another perk to exercise is it helps

to reduce stress and, in turn,

reduce cortisol levels.

Sausage & Grilled

Veggie Platter

4-6

serves

Ingredients

• 4 zucchini, halved lengthwise

• 3 onions, halved and cut into 1/2-inchthick

wedges

• 1 lb. mini sweet peppers

• 19 oz. Hot Italian Sausage Links

• Specially Selected Sicilian Extra Virgin

Olive Oil

• Stonemill Sea Salt

• 1 c. Tuscan Garden Mild Giardiniera,

plus 3 tablespoons brine

• 1/4 c. Southern Grove Roasted, Salted

Pistachios, coarsely chopped

Directions

Prepare a grill for two-zone cooking over

medium-high heat (for a charcoal grill, pour

the coals onto one half of the grill; for a gas

grill, heat all of the burners to high, then turn off

one of the end burners before cooking).

Meanwhile, on a sheet pan or large

plate, toss the zucchini, onions, peppers,

and sausage with olive oil and salt to coat.

When you’re ready to grill, clean and grease

the grates. Place the zucchini, onions, and

peppers over the flame (direct heat) and

place the sausage where there isn’t a flame

beneath (indirect heat). Cover and cook,

flipping occasionally, until the vegetables are

charred and tender and the sausages are

cooked through, 15 to 20 minutes.

Transfer the vegetables to a platter. Move

the sausages over the flame and grill until

browned and crisp, 2 to 4 minutes. Transfer

the sausages to the platter, then sprinkle the

giardiniera, giardiniera brine, and pistachios

over top.
