From the
EDITOR
Spring has always been a time of hope and this year, after many experiencing
lockdown and isolation, this sentiment feels especially true. As restrictions have
eased, life is gradually returning to some kind of normal. But while some things
remain the same, lockdown has irrevocably changed many aspects of our lives, and
this includes our beauty and skincare rituals and how we view ourselves – literally.
For most of 2021, video calls replaced in-person interactions and with this came increased
scrutiny of our physical appearance. A recent survey (page 94) of Australians reveals that
we have become more critical of our appearance in the past 12 months due to digital
interactions, and it’s not hard to imagine this is happening globally. In addition to looking
‘tired’, ‘drawn’ and ‘older’, the study shows that, thanks to camera angles prompting a new
perspective, we’re also focused on our double chins, drooping jowls and less-than-chiseled
jawlines. So if you’re one of the 48% who are planning to have some ‘tweakments’, our
2022 guide to the most popular face treatments on page 98 – from anti-wrinkle injections to
thread lifts – will help you navigate your options.
Beauty as self-care has had a huge moment throughout the pandemic, and it’s not going
anywhere. A simple beauty and skincare routine are tangible acts of self-care that can help
reduce stress and lift us out of a funk. With the mercury rising, on page 40 we speak with
dermatologist Dr Bercu Kim on how to prep our skin and update our skincare ‘wardrobe’
for summer.
We’re also gearing up for the festive season (remember parties?!). On page 70 we have all
the gadgets and gizmos to style your hair like a pro, and on page 62 we chat with L’Oreal
Paris celebrity MUA Chantelle Baker who shares her go-to makeup tips and tricks to put
your best face forward (and we share our favourite products to achieve it!). We also deep-dive
into the fascinating world of celebrity beauty brands (page 24) and whether they really live
up to the hype.
Now that international borders are opening up for many of us, it’s time to tick off some
bucket list items. On page 104 we set the scene for your next overseas vacay – using Conde
Naste Traveller’s top wellness destination resorts of 2021 as inspiration. Enjoy!

BIOMIMIC SKINCARE + SKINDNA
= PERSONALISED DNA-BASED
SKINCARE
From the founders of SkinDNA,
the world’s most popular skin
DNA testing technology, comes
BIOMIMIC skincare, an Aussie brand
that has created a simple skincare
solution personalised for each user,
at an affordable price point.
Made in small batches right here
in Australia, the range offers two
essentials and six booster treatments
that target different skin concerns.
Though you can purchase BIOMIMIC
products on their own, they’re
designed to work in conjunction
with a SkinDNA genetic test, which
analyses the 12 skin functions of
your DNA profile and provides
you with a personalised report on
the ingredients, supplements and
professional treatments most suited
to your DNA profile and hereditary
predispositions to ageing.
‘We all want healthy, youthfullooking
skin but not everyone
understands the complexities of
their skin genetics, and how the
wrong product selection, coupled
with hereditary predispositions,
could be costing you money on
skincare that simply won’t work for
you,’ explains Stefan Mazy, founder
of SkinDNA and BIOMIMIC.
Mazy, who has dedicated his
entire career to understanding the
role that genetics plays in skin health
and ageing and, subsequently, the
scientific advancement of predictive
ageing, says that BIOMIMIC is the
result of over a decade of research.
‘I designed BIOMIMIC with one
mission: to provide an easy-to-use
and targeted solution to address
the five main skin ageing pathways
we analyse in a SkinDNA test:
sun damage and pigmentation,
wrinkling, free radical damage,
skin sensitivity, as well as firmness
and elasticity.
‘I truly believe that skincare
doesn’t have to be complex, so it
was important to me that BIOMIMIC
included only the products you
absolutely need and none that you
don’t. The result is a personalised
skincare routine for every user,
where each product has been
carefully developed for maximum
absorption, so your skin can feel the
full benefits.’
RRP: BIOMIMIC Essentials: $59;
Boosters: $69, SkinDNA Genetic
Test: $249

TheRISE
& RISE of
CELEBRITY
BEAUTY
BRANDS
REMEMBER WHEN EVERY CELEB HAD
A SIGNATURE SCENT? WELL, NOW
THEY’VE GOT ENTIRE PRODUCT LINES.
WE DELVE INSIDE THE LUCRATIVE WORLD
OF CELEBRITY BEAUTY BRANDS AND
WHETHER THEY’RE WORTH THE HYPE.
Elizabeth Taylor started it, Iman reigned supreme in the 90s,
Kylie Jenner made US$420 million in her first 18 months and
now ScarJo and Halsey are giving it a red-hot go. Even if it
wasn’t spelled out in the headline, you’d know in a heartbeat
we’re talking about celebrity beauty brands.
Celebs have long been walking and talking endorsements and
ambassadors for fashion and beauty brands, monetising their fame
by being the face of a product or campaign. But it appears this is no
longer enough for these beauty-preneurs – they are now creating
their own successful beauty brands in rapid succession.
The phenomenal success of these brands isn’t just because of their
name on the label – these products have some serious research and
science to back them. The epic rise of social media-led brands is also
a dominant factor in their rise to the top, dramatically changing the
traditional beauty landscape and how we consume beauty products.
We take a look at some of the best-known celebrity beauty lines
and offer a sneak peek at what’s to come.
FENTY BEAUTY
& FENTY SKIN
RIHANNA
When Fenty Beauty first launched in 2017,
it boasted $100 million in sales in its first
few weeks. More than just a cosmetics
brand, Fenty Beauty represents a
movement. The brand differentiated itself
not only with its cofounder, but also with its
dedication to diversity. Rihanna’s decision to
include 40 shades of foundation in her first
collection highlighted the limited nature of
existing makeup ranges and further fuelled
the ongoing debate around restrictive
beauty ideals.
‘Fenty Beauty was created for everyone,’
the singer and business mogul explained.
‘For women of all shades, personalities,
attitudes, cultures and races. I wanted
everyone to feel included. That’s the real
reason I made this line.’
In 2020 Fenty Skin was also added to the
beauty maven’s empire, and it has gone
on to become the blockbuster business
that Fenty Beauty is. The inclusivity ethos is
carried across to Fenty Skin, with the range
aiming to cater to everyone.
Fenty Skin is unsurprisingly designed to
complement Fenty Beauty makeup and has
been tested on all skin types and tones to
work seamlessly. Riri has prioritised clean
formulas that are also oil-free, vegan and
gluten free, with care for the coral reefs in
mind. The packaging is earth-conscious:
Think more recyclable materials and smart
refillable packs that feel luxurious.
According to Forbes, Rihanna is now
officially a billionaire, with a net worth of
US$1.7 billion. This makes her the richest
female musician in the world – with Fenty
Beauty and Fenty Skin making up the bulk of
her wealth.

KORA ORGANICS
MIRANDA KERR
FEATURE
One of the OG beauty entrepreneurs,
since 2009 Victoria’s Secret Angelturned-mogul
Miranda Kerr has been
keeping our beauty bags stocked with
her KORA Organics skincare range. As
the names suggests, KORA Organics
works with certified organic ingredients
to provide nourishment for the skin.
The range launched in Sephora in
the US in 2017 and has retail partners in
more than 25 countries. Kora Organics
has helped her earn an estimated net
worth of $52 million, according to the
Australian Financial Review.
Kerr was one of the first to market
wellness beauty: how mind, body, and
skin are connected. Since its launch, all
KORA Organics products are not only
“clean” but also certified organic, a
rarity in the beauty industry back then
then and even now.
KYLIE COSMETICS
KYLIE JENNER
As the youngest member of the Kardashian-Jenner clan, in
2016 Kylie Jenner leveraged her fame to create one of the most
bankable brands in the beauty industry, Kylie Cosmetics. After
sending fans into a frenzy with her now legendary lip kits, Kylie
expanded her range to include eyeshadow palettes (Kyshadows),
concealers, highlighters (Kylighters) and makeup brushes.
The products consistently sell out within minutes and, within the
first 18 months of the brand’s launch, Kylie raked in a staggering
US$420 million in retail sales alone.
Just two years later, in 2018, her Kylie Cosmetics company was
worth an estimated US$900 million, and she is the youngest person
to appear on the annual ranking of America’s Richest Self-Made
Women by Forbes (she’s since garnered a net worth of $1 billion).
In 2019, she sold 51% of the company to Coty for $600 million.
Why is Kylie Cosmetics so popular? Perhaps because she’s the
ultimate influencer who understands the power of the personal
brand and the psyche of Millennials and Gen Z-ers, or maybe it’s
just because the products really are as great as her sales are.
Piggy-backing the overwhelming success of her cosmetics
brand, in 2019 Kylie released six basic skincare products under a
new brand Kylie Skin. It’s cruelty-free, vegan, gluten-free, paraben
and sulfate-free and suitable for all skin types – and comes in
on-point Gen Z pink packaging.
GOOP
GWYNETH
PALTROW
Editorial credit: Tinseltown / Shutterstock.com
While not strictly a beauty brand,
Goop deserves a special mention for
its transformation of the upwardly
mobile wellness space. Gwyneth
Paltrow launched Goop back in 2008
as a newsletter hawking her favourite
healthy recipes and face creams
and she has since turned it into an
internationally recognised wellness
and lifestyle empire valued at more
than US$250 million.
Goop offers avant-garde wellness
advice, fabulously decadent travel
recommendations, and a curated
shop of clean beauty, fashion and
home goods that you may need a
second mortgage for.
The brand has courted controversy
from the start, usually to do with
unsubstantiated health advice, such
as walking barefoot to cure insomnia
or sleeping with jade eggs in your
lady parts, or getting stung by bees
to improve your skin.
One of the more entertaining
lawsuits is over a US$75 candle called
This Smells Like My Vagina, which
reportedly “exploded” in a Texas
man’s bedroom.

FEATURE
FLOWER BEAUTY
DREW BARRYMORE
At the other end of the accessibility spectrum
is Flower Beauty by Drew Barrymore, which has
become an international cult beauty brand.
Launched in Australia in 2019 (after years of success
under its belt in the US), Flower Beauty offers highquality
ingredients and premium packaging with an
affordable price tag.
‘I’ve also been in a makeup chair since I was 6
years old and had the fortune of working with the
icons of the beauty industry, so learning, being in
love with products, pigments, brands, companies,
and just being a constant student of makeup,’ she
told Business Insider.
RARE BEAUTY
SELENA GOMEZ
Started in 2020 in the US, Selena Gomez’s Rare
Beauty amassed US$60 million in revenue in its
first year and a current Instagram following of 2.7
million. This pigment-popping brand is vegan and
cruelty-free with a mission to cater to every skin
colour and be gender inclusive.
The singer has spoken openly about her mental
health and body image struggles in the past, and
gives 1% of all sales to the Rare Impact Fund,
which provides mental health services with a
focus on those in underserved communities. She
also wants the clean makeup brand to represent
inclusivity in every way possible.
‘Rare Beauty is about accepting who you are
– and finding the beauty in your imperfections,’
she said in an IG post. ‘Rare Beauty is more
than a beauty brand. Our mission is to shape
conversations around beauty, self-acceptance, and
mental health. We will work to help people get
more access to support and services. We want to
help people feel more authentically connected to
one another and less alone in this world.’
THE HONEST COMPANY
JESSICA ALBA
Inspired by the birth of her first child, Honor, and
her own history of childhood illness, actress turned
entrepreneur Jessica Alba founded her wellness
business The Honest Company in 2012, which she
followed with Honest Beauty three years later.
This non-toxic line of beauty and haircare
products has been created without parabens
and phthalates. ‘I founded The Honest Company
because I wanted safe, effective products that
perform,’ the business mogul shared. ‘After all, you
shouldn’t have to choose between what works and
what’s good for you.’
The Honest Company experienced amazing
growth in its first year of operation, reaching US$12
million and a valuation of $1 billion in 2015. As
of May 2021, it’s now listed on the Nasdaq stock
exchange, one of the first ‘celebrity stocks’ to go
public and with an initial market value of around
US$2.1 billion. Honesty definitely pays off!

HAUS LABORATORIES
LADY GAGA
Lady Gaga and a makeup line – now that’s a nobrainer!
Who better to launch a makeup range
other than the queen of pop (and avant-garde
looks) herself? Haus Laboratories was launched
in September 2019 and is vegan and crueltyfree.
With the mesmerising colour palettes and
finishes you’d expect from Lady Gaga, this is
one fun makeup line!
‘I’m so grateful that makeup inspired a
bravery in me I didn’t know I had. I’ve come to
accept that I discovered my beauty by having
the ability to invent myself and transform,’ said
the Lady herself in an IG post.
With only two years in the beauty business,
Haus Laboratories has already generated
US$140 million in revenue.

END OF AN ERA;
KKW BEAUTY
SHUTTING DOWN
In July 2021, Kim Kardashian
announced that was shutting down
KKW Beauty in order to relaunch the
line under a ‘completely new brand’.
‘To our loyal customers, it all started
with a contour kit and expanded to
eyes, lips, body and many incredible
collections over the past four years,’
she said in an IG post. On August
1st at midnight we will be shutting
down the KKWBeauty.com site so
that we can come back to you under
a completely new brand with new
formulas that are more modern,
innovative, and packaged in an
elevated and sustainable new look.’
Like her lil sis Kylie, the OG
Kardashian sister catapulted off
her fame and immense following
to create KKW Beauty, leveraging
influence and social media reach to
sell US$14 million worth of makeup
on her first day of sales, according to
the Business of Fashion.
‘With social media you can have
a direct-to-consumer brand and if
you market yourself and promote it
the right way you can have a really
successful business, something I don’t
think people thought was possible
five years ago,’ the reality star said at
the 2018 Business of Fashion summit.
The brand started with a single
contour kit in 2017 and grew to
an estimated valuation of US$100
million. We can only assume Kim’s
‘completely new brand’ will reach the
same cult status.

Jessica Alba The Honest Company $300,500,000
Kylie Jenner Kylie Cosmetics $200,000,000

PERFUME: THE OG OF
CELEB BEAUTY BRANDS
Fragrances hold special places in our hearts, and some of the
most iconic are from red carpet A-listers.
One of the original celebrity perfumers, Elizabeth Taylor’s
release of ‘White Diamonds’ in 1991 has earned a cool
US$1 billion in sales – and inspired generations of celebrities to
jump on board the scent train, which reached fever pitch in the
90s and early Naughties.
Back in 2002, everyone was buying JLo’s ‘Glow’ (and
contributing to its $300 million in sales in the first year), and then
dabbled in a bit of Britney’s ‘Curious’ a couple of years later.
Our allegiance to these sweet-smelling A-listers remains
strong – Kim Kardashian sold $10 million of her perfume line
‘Crystal’ in its first day on the market in 2017, $1 million of which
occurred in the first hour. More than 300,000 units were sold
without customers ever even smelling the scents, highlighting
the sheer marketing power of Kimmy K.

SCARLETT JOHANSEN
Slated to launch in the US in early 2022,
ScarJo is the latest beauty entrepreneur
to hit the scene. We don’t know too

the self-care trend.
‘Several years ago, I took a step back

Former Juicy Couture exec cofounder

We’re curious to know which void
hasn’t been filled in this busy market,

SKIN
The new
pigmentation
triple threat
INTRODUCING OXY-R PEPTIDES, MEDIK8’S NEW PATENTED,
HIGH-STRENGTH OXYRESVERATROL BRIGHTENING
SOLUTION FOR PIGMENTATION AND UNEVEN SKIN TONE.
Uneven skin tone? We’ve got you
covered! Medik8’s Oxy-R Peptides is
a new brightening peptide solution
which helps tackle pigmentation from three
different angles, helping to fade the appearance
of skin discolouration and unveil visibly
brighter, more even-toned skin.
Oxyresveratrol is at the heart of the Oxy-R
Peptides formula, an antioxidant that boasts
potent brightening and anti-inflammatory
properties. One of Oxyresveratrol’s main
benefits is its ability to help inhibit tyrosinase,
the main enzyme responsible for melanin
production. Studies* have shown oxyresveratrol
is 33 times more effective in inhibiting
tyrosinase production than kojic acid and 45
times more effective than resveratrol.
Oxyresveratrol is highly unstable, which
makes Oxy-R Peptides even more groundbreaking
– for the first time ever, Medik8 have
stabilised it at an ultra-high concentration of
1%, delivering the highest available strength on
the market.
Science 101:
WHAT ARE PEPTIDES?
Peptides are short chains of amino acids, linked
together by peptide bonds. There are 20 different
naturally-occurring amino acids, which can be linked
together in any order to give millions of different
peptide combinations. Our skin is naturally overflowing
with different kinds of proteins and peptides, including
some of the most important, collagen and elastin,
which are both responsible for retaining the skin’s
natural strength, resilience and suppleness.
When applied to the skin, peptides can act as
chemical messengers, communicating with cells to
perform a specific function and triggering a response in
the skin. They give your skin a specific instruction to do
‘something’, and that ‘something’ entirely depends on
what order your amino acids are in. Every peptide has
a unique superpower to target different skin concerns,
including fine lines and wrinkles, lost volume, dull and
uneven skin tone, pigmentation, and to help combat
Advanced Glycation End (AGE) product formation, a
metabolic process that damages collagen in the body.
TARGETS PIGMENTATION
IN 3 WAYS
Alongside oxyresveratrol, Oxy-R Peptides
contains two additional powerful
brightening peptides. Tetrapeptide-30
is a peptide that helps to interrupt the
pathways that lead to discolourations and
uneven skin tone, while Acetyl Glycyl
Beta-Alanine helps to inhibit the transport
of melanin to the skin, where the
overproduction of pigment become visible
on the complexion.
Combined with oxyresveratrol, this
powerhouse trio offers new hope to
pigmentation sufferers.
The 1% oxyresveratrol solution is stored
in a patented preservation system in the
lid of the bottle until it is plunged into the
rest of the formula using ‘click to activate’
packaging. To further ensure maximum
freshness, Medki8 have also split the
formula into two 10ml bottles.
Lightweight and silky in texture with an
innovative formula and delivery system,
Oxy-R Peptides will help visibly brighten,
improve clarity and work to combat all
types of hyperpigmentation concerns on
all skin tones.

SKIN
Q&A
with
Daniel Isaacs
DIRECTOR OF RESEARCH AT MEDIK8
WHY DOES MEDIK8
FOCUS ON PEPTIDES?
One of the frontrunners in cuttingedge
skincare science, peptides
are proven to be truly powerful in
targeting many different skin concerns.
At Medik8, we have harnessed the
many different powers of peptides
in our Peptide Family of products.
We have designed the range to be
the perfect addition to our proven
CSA philosophy (vitamin C and
sunscreen by day, vitamin A by night)
to transform your CSA foundation
into a bespoke routine made especially
for you.
WHY ARE PEPTIDES
IMPORTANT IN A
SKINCARE ROUTINE?
Peptides might be in the spotlight for
their incredible skin plumping powers,
but peptides are way more than a
one-trick pony. Each peptide has a
different action on the skin. Not just
for skin ageing but also for tackling
skin dullness, hyperpigmentation, antiglycation,
moisturising the skin and
much more. We wanted to harness
as many different peptide powers as
possible in our new Peptide Family.
The ideal addition to your CSA
routine, our full range of innovative
peptide combinations can help to
support many different skin concerns.
WHO ARE THEY
BEST FOR?
Anyone who is looking to improve
their general overall skin condition
or target specific skin concerns,
such as skin ageing, dullness,
hyperpigmentation or just improve
overall hydration.
HOW ARE THEY
BEST DELIVERED TO
THE SKIN?
Peptides can be quite large molecules
and can benefit from additional help
getting where they need to be in
the skin. Many of our peptides are
conjugated to fatty acids to make them
more oil-soluble and help them to
penetrate deeper into the skin. In our
Liquid Peptides formula, we also use
a drone-delivery system to help deliver
our peptides where they need to go
in the skin.
We recommend using peptides
alongside a CSA skincare routine
(vitamin C and sunscreen by day,
vitamin A by night).
HOW CAN
PROFESSIONALS
INCORPORATE THEM
INTO TREATMENTS?
At Medik8 we utilise our best
technology across our retail and
professional offerings. Many of
our facials include our best peptide
products. For instance, our Clarity
Facial contains both Clarity Peptides
and Bakuchiol Peptides and, depending
on the clients’ needs, our professional
therapists have the option to use Liquid
Peptides within our facials.
WHAT’S NEW IN PEPTIDE
RESEARCH?
A really interesting and innovative
peptide that is in our latest launch,
Oxy-R Peptides, is Tetrapeptide-30. It
works to help interrupt the pathways
that lead to discolourations and uneven
skin tone and will help visibly brighten,
improve clarity and combat all types of
hyperpigmentation concerns.

Summertime
SKINCARE
SUMMER IS FOR SUNSHINE,
SWIMMING AND BEACH
HAIR, BUT FOR OUR SKIN IT
CAN MEAN PIGMENTATION,
DEHYDRATION AND DNA
DAMAGE. WE CHAT WITH
SPECIALIST DERMATOLOGIST
DR BURCU KIM ABOUT HOW WE
CAN PREPARE OUR SKIN FOR
THE SUMMER SUN ONSLAUGHT.
The skin you’re in is a complex, multifunctioning
organ, constantly renewing
and adapting to environmental assaults
and hormonal changes. And that’s why
it’s important to switch up your skincare routine
and products as the seasons change and give it a
helping hand.
If your skin tends to freak out as the mercury
begins to soar and humidity levels rise, there are
measures you can take to keep it happy.
We asked Sydney dermatologist Dr Burcu Kim
(drburcukim.com) what transitional skincare really
means and why it’s so important.

Q&A with
Dr Burcu Kim
SKIN
DO WE NEED TO LIGHTEN
UP OUR SKINCARE
ROUTINES IN SUMMER?
Yes, especially if your skin is oily or
acne-prone. The heat and humidity of
the warmer months, when combined
with thick and occlusive products,
can clog your pores and contribute
to acne and inflammation. It is best
to switch to lighter formulations in
summer and make sure your makeup
products are non-comedogenic or
oil-free.
SHOULD WE BE
EXFOLIATING MORE OR
LESS IN SUMMER?
It’s best not to overdo it with
exfoliation at any time of the year.
Generally, I would recommend
exfoliating two to three times a week
for normal skin. If your skin is prone
to acne and on the oily side, you
can try exfoliating a little bit more in
summer. Conversely, if your skin is
prone to dryness and irritation, which
is more often the case in winter, then
you should exfoliate less.
Another thing to consider is
that we tend to spend more time
outdoors in the sun, and the AHAs
/ BHAs that we use to exfoliate can
make skin more sensitive to sunlight.
Remember to apply sunscreen and
moisturise to help mitigate any sunsensitivity
and irritation.
HOW CAN WE KEEP SKIN
HYDRATED WITHOUT
BEING OILY?
It’s important to keep moisturising
your skin even during the warmer
months, however it is best to
switch to a lighter formulation. The
combination of heat, sweat and oil
with occlusive skincare products
and makeup can lead to breakouts.
Lighter formations include gel-cream
moisturisers, or simply opt for a
hyaluronic acid serum under your SPF.
Hyaluronic acid is a naturally
occurring ingredient which is
classified as a humectant – a
substance that retains moisture and
is capable of binding over 1,000
times its weight in water. As such,
it is a key ingredient to look for in
your moisturiser. L’Oréal Paris has
recently launched the True Match
Nude Plumping Tinted Serum which
includes the plumping power of
1% hyaluronic acid. This is a great
product to add to your summer
beauty routine to help keep your
skin hydrated.
WHY DOES
PIGMENTATION SEEM
MORE PROMINENT IN
SUMMER? HOW CAN
WE HELP TO REVERSE
CUMULATIVE SUN
DAMAGE?
There are many different reasons
we might have pigmentation on our
face, however the greatest enemy
is UV radiation. Your epidermis
contains cells called melanocytes that
store and produce pigment known
as melanin. These melanocytes
produce more melanin in response
to UV radiation. With increased
sun exposure, pigmentation often
gets worse in summer. Wearing a
physical sunblock, such as zinc oxide,
helps to block visible light which
can contribute to pigmentation.
It should be applied daily and
reapplied every two hours, and
used in conjunction with other sunprotective
measures such as wearing
a hat and seeking shade.
With regards to reversing
cumulative sun damage, there
is nothing that will completely
reverse sun damage and that’s why
prevention is critical. The numberone
ingredient I always recommend
is sunscreen.
Antioxidants such as resveratrol
and Vitamin C are also great
scavengers of the free radicals that
damage DNA when skin is exposed
to UV radiation.
Retinol, a derivative of Vitamin
A, also helps to repair damaged
skin cells by encouraging cell
turnover and increasing collagen
production. It is the gold-standard
anti-ageing ingredient which can
help with correcting texture, tone
and pigmentation and help with
fine lines and wrinkles. Vitamin A is
available in various forms, including
over-the-counter retinol products
to prescription-strength retinoids,
which can be more effective but
more irritating. It is best to start with
a retinol which is ultra-stable but less
irritating, starting with a couple of
times a week, then bumping up the
application if your skin isn’t irritated.
Another way of addressing sundamaged
skin is laser and lightbased
therapies. Some of these
technologies can target pigment
and are great at fading sun spots.
Others are great at targeting the
redness and vascular changes that
arise as a result of sun damage. We
can also resurface the texture of the
skin using certain types of lasers,
which can help correct some of the
signs of ageing and sun damage.
www.cosbeauty.com.au 43
SKIN
WHAT SHOULD WE BE
LOOKING FOR IN A
SUNSCREEN? ARE WE
OKAY TO USE A DUAL-
PURPOSE MOISTURISER
WITH SUNSCREEN?
The best sunscreen is one that
you will apply! Make sure that
your sunscreen is approved by the
Therapeutic Goods Administration
(TGA). It should be broad-spectrum
SPF30+ or higher. If you’re outdoors
or exercising, also make sure it is
water-proof.
Sunscreen should be applied
every morning, and reapplied every
two hours. It is best to apply it 20
minutes before you go outside.
Don’t forget to apply it to your lips,
ears, neck and the back of your
hands. The best formulation is a
cream or lotion, which are more
reliable than aerosol sunscreens.
Whilst a dual-purpose moisturiser
with sunscreen is better than
nothing, it doesn’t compare to
using a sunscreen on its own. You
probably won’t apply enough of the
dual sunscreen/moisturiser to give
you the coverage that you need and
the sunscreen may be diluted by
other constituents of the moisturiser.
Therefore, sunscreen is best applied
as its own layer.
WHAT ARE THE
SUMMERTIME SERUMS
WE SHOULD BE
INVESTING IN?
Different serums can help combat
different skin concerns and I
would recommend you consult a
dermatologist to help tailor a routine
that is best suited to your skin. Many
serums require consistent use over
all seasons in order to see the best
results, although in summer you
may wish to switch over to lighter
formulations that are less likely to
feel greasy and cause breakouts.
Generally, I would recommend
hyaluronic acid to moisturise. The
L’Oreal Paris Revitalift Filler Serum
with Hyaluronic Acid is a lighter
serum formulation and doesn’t
feel greasy on the skin. I would
also recommend Vitamin C and
other antioxidants like resveratrol
to be applied in the morning along
with your sunscreen as they help
scavenge the free radicals induced
by UV radiation. The SkinCeuticals
Phloretin CF and SkinCeuticals
Silymarin CF are great options
containing L-ascorbic acid (a highly
effective form of Vitamin C) for
summer and they are less likely to
cause breakouts.
A retinol should be applied at
night, starting initially with a couple
of nights a week and then increasing
to nightly use if no irritation. It
is best to start with an over-thecounter
retinol as this is less likely to
cause irritation but can still be very
effective. For example, the L’Oréal
Paris Revitalift Retinol Night Serum is
at an optimal concentration of 0.2%
pure retinol and is an ultra-stable
formulation. Prescription-strength
retinoids are even more potent but
more likely to cause irritation.
Above all else, the best
investment for summer is a broadspectrum
sunscreen with SPF 30
sor higher.
YOUR NO #1 SUMMER
SKINCARE ADVICE?
Protect your skin from UV radiation.
UV radiation not only causes skin
cancer but can lead to pigmentation,
redness, premature ageing and
wrinkles, along with a whole myriad
of other detrimental skin changes.
Prevention is always key!
BUT FIRST, SPF
Warmer weather means more sun
exposure. The impact of sun damage
is cumulative; it gets worse as we age
as we lose the ability to repair collagen
as effectively. Australia has some of
the harshest sun in the world with
little ozone protection, so remaining
focused on covering up and wearing
sunscreen is extremely important.
Apply sunscreen as the last step in your
skincare routine.

SKIN
CLEAN & BRIGHT
Swap out your creamy cleanser for gentle
foaming, gel- or oil-based cleansers. While an
oil-based cleanser may seem counterintuitive
when you’re wanting to control an oil slick,
think of it as a “like attracts like” deal. The
natural oils found in these gentle cleansers
penetrate deep into pores to dissolve build-up
and excess oil while keeping the skin’s natural
moisture barrier intact and thereby helping to
prevent excess production of sebum.
Exfoliating products (including AHAs and
BHAs) to remove dead skin cells and stimulate
blood flow will also boost your skin’s radiance
and help prevent breakouts and acne flare-ups.

SKIN
PIGMENTATION
& SKIN REPAIR
Serums, particularly those with Vitamins A and C, are important
all year round for smooth and clear skin, but all the more essential
in summer as sun damage manifests in freckles, brown spots and
other forms of pigmentation, and fine lines and wrinkles.
The myriad benefits of active ingredients include increasing the
natural hydration levels in the skin; strengthening the skin barrier
function; improving skin firmness and reducing the appearance of
fine lines by increasing skin cell turnover and collagen production;
improving the immune function of the skin; reducing excess oil
production; and reducing uneven skin tone and pigmentation.
If you want to really up the ante, also look for products
containing hyaluronic acid and peptides to further improve the
look and feel of your skin and reduce signs of ageing.

SKIN
Telomeres &
intrinsic ageing
Skin, or cutaneous, ageing is caused
by two distinct processes: intrinsic
and extrinsic factors. Intrinsic, or
chronologic ageing, is determined by
our genetic clock and is a continuous
process that usually begins in our mid-
20s but doesn’t become evident for
decades. In our 20s, collagen production
begins to slow and elastin has a bit
less spring. Dead skin cells do not shed
as quickly and turnover of new skin
cells decreases.
Extrinsic ageing is environmentally
induced and manifests in age-associated
skin changes, including thinning, laxity
and wrinkles. In addition, sun-exposure
leads to pigmentation, premature
wrinkling, telangiectasia and actinic
elastosis, not to mention skin cancer.
At a cellular level, ageing is thought
to be related to the shortening of
telomeres (the end caps of DNA that
protect chromosomes). In a Nobel Prizeawarded
discovery, scientists have found
that telomeres shorten with each cell
replication and eventually enter a stage
of decline.
Chromosomal DNA is compromised
when the telomeres wear out, causing
cellular senescence – a key catalyst to the
ageing process.
SkinMTX’s award-winning TeloZyme TM
Youth Activator is a revolutionary
multifaceted serum that is inspired by
this discovery. It is specially formulated
to target telomeres and the integrity of
the skin for a more youthful-looking
appearance. CBM

3 STEPS. 30 MINUTES. THE BEST SKIN OF YOUR LIFE.
A
HydraFacial treatment is performed
somewhere in the world every 15
seconds. That’s because, ladies and
gents, HydraFacial is no ordinary facial. It’s an
experience. A pleasure. A feeling. A confidence
booster. And it offers the best skin of your life
in 30 minutes.
Skin Renu, a leading skin clinic in Balmain,
Sydney, is now offering HydraFacial treatments,
and it was high on my post-lockdown pamper
priority list.
HydraFacial couldn’t be easier or more
relaxing. After being greeted by the delightful
Diana in the welcoming, light-filled reception
of Skin Renu, I was set to start my road to
sparkling skin.
HydraFacial uses advanced, patented
vortex technology to deeply cleanse the skin
and effectively deliver botanical ingredients
containing nutrients such as hyaluronic acid,
horse chestnut seed extract, red algae extract,
copper, zinc and magnesium peptides to where
they do the most good. In addition, HydraFacial
also delivers powerful antioxidants to counteract
damage by free radicals – from pollution, sun
and stress – which can degrade the skin and
accelerate the ageing process.
HydraFacial incorporates spa therapy with
medical technology to create truly exceptional
skin revitalisation results. It’s a facial cleanse,
microdermabrasion, skin resurfacing treatment
and antioxidant boost in one quick, easy and
pleasant skincare session.
Suitable for all skin types, HydraFacial
improves the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles,
congested and enlarged pores, oily or acne
prone skin, hyperpigmentation and brown
spots. Each treatment noticeably decongests
and shrinks pores, and plumps the skin with
antioxidant and hyaluronic acid infusions.

CLINIC SPOTLIGHT
NORTHERN
SKIN
SKIN
STUDIO
DR MONIQUE FLORES, THE FOUNDER
OF TOWNSVILLE’S LEADING SKIN CLINIC
NORTHERN SKIN STUDIO, REVEALS HOW
SHE HAS COMBINED HER PASSION FOR
SKIN CANCER MEDICINE AND AESTHETIC
TREATMENTS TO CREATE A UNIQUE COSMETIC
CLINIC FOR SUN-LOVING AUSTRALIANS.
After 17 years treating patients
in Townsville, one of the
hottest cities in Australia with
an average maximum of 29 degrees,
Dr Monique Flores knows more than
most about skin cancer and aesthetic
treatments. Here she shares with
us her journey from local GP to
cosmetic doctor.
HOW DID YOU BEGIN
YOUR CAREER IN THE
AESTHETICS INDUSTRY?
I’ve always been very interested in
aesthetics but didn’t pursue a career in
the industry until after I began working
in General Practice in 2002.
In my role at a suburban practice,
I ended up treating a lot of patients
with skin cancer and found that I really
enjoyed it, so I began developing my
skills and knowledge in the area.
Around the same time, I decided
to pursue my interest in aesthetics as
well, so I began training in cosmetic
injectables. It wasn’t easy, but I
gradually established my career as
a GP specialising in skin cancer
and a cosmetic GP by working as a
contractor between two clinics.
After working this way for many
years – while also completing my
Masters in Skin Cancer Medicine and
numerous aesthetic treatment courses
– I decided the time was finally right
to open my own clinic.
TELL US A LITTLE
ABOUT NORTHERN SKIN
STUDIO?
I opened Northern Skin Studio in
2014 offering just three main services
– skin cancer diagnosis/treatments,
advanced skin therapy (eg, laser
treatments) and cosmetic injectables.
As I already had a loyal following of
doctors have performed a lot of skin
cancer surgery with many of these in
facial areas.
We’re not plastic surgeons, but
doing such surgery gives us the skills
and experience to feel very comfortable
with facial anatomy and this can make
a real difference when performing
aesthetic procedures – particularly
cosmetic injectables. It helps us give
our patients the natural-looking results
they want in the safest possible way.
patients, the studio was busy from
day one and has gradually increased
in size and services since.
Today, Northern Skin Studio has
16 staff (including four doctors and
three nurses), 12 treatment rooms
and an extensive menu including:
wrinkle relaxing injections; dermal
filler injections; EmSculpt body
contouring; Mona Lisa vaginal
rejuvenation; carbon laser fractional
laser resurfacing; RF microneedling;
photodynamic therapy; HydraFacials;
chemical peels; and NeoGraft
hair restoration.
WHAT DO YOU THINK
MAKES NORTHER SKIN
STUDIO SPECIAL?
I think the main thing that makes
us different to most aesthetic clinics
is our team’s many years of medical
experience. For example, all four of us
WHAT ARE THE BIGGEST
CHANGES YOU’VE SEEN
IN YOUR AESTHETIC
CAREER?
I think one of the biggest and best
changes is how everyone in the
industry (cosmetic practitioners and
clients) have become more open.
When I began my career, cosmetic
patients were a lot more secretive
about the treatments they were
having and often didn’t even tell their
closest friends.
Likewise, cosmetic practitioners
often didn’t show the work they did
(ie, their patients’ before and after
photos) to anyone but a few colleagues.
Today, increasing numbers of
cosmetic clients are happy to tell (and
show) almost everyone the work they
have had done and many cosmetic
practitioners are showing the work
they do to almost everyone, too.
I think this whole change in
attitude has largely been driven by
social media (especially Instagram),
which has increased consumer
obsession with beauty and knowledge
of available treatments.
I think this is good for the whole
industry as it empowers consumers;
they now have so many clinic and
treatment options that practitioners
can no longer just tell them that
they’re good at what they do – they
have to show them and prove what
they can do.
www.cosbeauty.com.au 59
THE KEY TO A POSITIVE OUTCOME FOR CLIENTS IS A GOOD
CONSULTATION AS THEY DON’T HAVE THE KNOWLEDGE TO
KNOW WHAT TREATMENTS WILL OR WON’T WORK FOR THEM.
SKIN
WHAT DO YOU THINK
ARE THE BIGGEST
CHALLENGES
FACING AESTHETIC
PRACTITIONERS TODAY?
A lot of people in the aesthetic
industry seem to be concerned
about meeting ‘unrealistic’ patient
expectations. I felt this pressure
in the past, but have worked on
my consulting skills to minimise
this pressure.
The key to a positive outcome for
clients is a good consultation as they
don’t have the knowledge to know
what treatments will or won’t work
for them. It is up to us, the cosmetic
practitioners, to be 100 percent
honest with them when we explain
their treatment options so that their
expectations about the results (and
pain and recovery time) are realistic
before we start treating them.
WHAT DO YOU THINK
ARE THE BIGGEST
AESTHETIC TRENDS?
Trends come and go in this industry
and a lot of the time the treatments
don’t do what’s expected.
The trend that’s apparent to me is
that clients are now very happy to have
regular maintenance treatments that
are subtle but significant and don’t
leave them looking frozen. They are
happy to have some facial movement
and aren’t demanding complete
wrinkle erasing.
There’s also much more investment
in skin treatments with energy-based
devices (lasers, radiofrequency, etc),
which is great. We have always told
clients that it looks incongruous to
have a smooth wrinkle-free face with
skin that looks unhealthy.
WHAT’S THE LATEST
TREATMENT/SERVICE ON
OFFER AT NORTHERN
SKIN STUDIO?
We are very excited to be the first
clinic in North Queensland offering
NeoGraft hair restoration treatments.
For a long time, we have known that
hair loss is damaging to the confidence
and self-esteem of so many of our
patients, men and women, but until
now we haven’t been able to offer
them an effective solution.
I am really happy that we can
now offer such a minimally invasive
procedure (no incisions or visible
scarring) to help people get their
natural hairlines – and their
confidence – back.
During the treatment, we use the
NeoGraft device [which only arrived
in Australia 18 months ago] to gently
extract individual hair follicles from
the patient’s donor site, usually the
back of their head, and then implant
them in balding areas.
The patient is comfortable
throughout the procedure as they
are lightly sedated and can go home
immediately afterwards.
We all really look forward to not
only performing the procedure on so
many of our patients but also watching
their physical and psychological
transformation as their hair gradually
grows back.
WHAT ARE YOUR PLANS
FOR NORTHERN SKIN
STUDIOS IN THE NEXT 18
MONTHS?
I am going to continue doing what
I have done since I first opened our
doors – offer only the best, most
up-to-date treatment options to our
patients. I really think this is the key
to the clinic’s success. I try not to get
distracted by trends and just focus on
providing treatments and services that
I know are effective and only employ
staff that have the skills and experience
to do their jobs properly.
It is very important that patients
trust all of us, regardless of which
treatments we are performing. And the
only way we can have their trust is if
we are 100 percent honest with them
about the treatments every step of the
way. CBM

DEFINING YOUR
NATURAL JAWLINE
‘The beauty about makeup is how we can master ways to define and highlight areas of
our facial features,’ says go-to celebrity MUA Chantelle Baker. ‘One of my favourite ways
to achieve the perfect sculpted look is to begin with a deeper foundation, a few shades
darker than your skin tone, and map out the areas you want defined.’
Baker likes to use a smaller tapered brush and run the deeper shade right under the chin
all the way along the jaw to the back of the ear. ‘Blending is the key to keeping it looking
natural, and my tip is to blend down the neck using short downward strokes. The result
should be seamless,’ she says. ‘I then use one of my favourite matte bronzers by L’Oréal
Paris ‘Back to Bronze’ over the top to set the overall contour and keep it long lasting.
Make sure you steer away from products with shimmer or anything too metallic.’

HOW TO
COMPLEMENT
YOUR
CHEEKBONES
According to Baker, the most effective
way to bring life to your cheekbones
is to use a blush that complements
your skin tone. ‘I absolutely adore the
two colours from L’Oréal Paris ‘Life’s a
Peach’ and ‘Melon Dollar Baby’,’ she
shares. ‘These tones are universally
designed to bring out a little glow to
your cheeks. I like to use a medium
brush and add either of these colours
to the apple of the cheek. My guide is
to look straight into a mirror and start
the application in-line with your pupil
and blend right over the apple of your
cheek, by starting slow and building
the colour to your liking.’
Another simple way of taking this to
the next level is to add a little shimmer
highlighter on the high points of your
cheekbones. Baker loves Glow Mon
Amour drops by L’Oréal Paris, using
her fingertips to apply. This product is
highly pigmented and gives the skin
an incredible illuminated finish.

ACHIEVING
A FLAWLESS
FINISH
‘I always go back to prep products when trying to achieve
that flawless finish,’ says Baker. ‘I am a huge fan of serums
and I love to massage them into the skin prior to makeup. A
simple way to achieve this is to use the L’Oréal Paris Revitalift
Filler Serum and start with a face massage. What I love best
about this product is how easily it gets absorbed into your
skin and how instantly moisturised you feel. I also love adding
a few drops into my foundation for extra glow and hydration.
My favourite combo right now is L’Oréal Paris True Match
Foundation and Revitalift Filler Serum.’

HIGHLIGHTING
THE EYES &
BROW AREA 2.
One of the easiest ways to accentuate
your eyes is to define them. Mascara
was invented to highlight and define
the eyes – it can do no wrong!
‘I have been the biggest fan of
any L’Oréal Paris mascaras for years,
and I select a particular product
depending on what finish I’m trying to
achieve,’ says Baker. ‘I like to lengthen
and define without being too clumpy.
My absolute go-to without fail is
the Lash Paradise mascara. When
applying, look down into a mirror and
wiggle the brush right from the roots
of your lashes all the way to the end.
This achieves maximum coverage
and definition.’
Next up: pay attention to your brow
area. Brows that are naturally defined
frame our face, and it’s important
to choose the correct shade and
products in order to achieve this.
‘I like to map out the brow shape
using a brow pencil and lightly fill in
any gaps. The L’Oréal Paris Brow Artist
Expert in Cool Brown is the perfect
shade for me. I don’t like anything
with too much warmth to it and also
love the styling brush to groom
brows into place. This is one of those
handbag essentials,’ says Baker.

DEFYING
AGE
Don’t let age define you! As Baker attests,
one of the biggest ways to stay youthful is
to keep positive and try to laugh and smile
as much as possible. ‘We all age, but you
can be young at heart forever – smile lines
are smile lines for a reason! But when you
do want to look and feel fresh, hydrate from
the inside out. Look after yourself and spoil
yourself from time to time.’

After the year we’ve had, it’s

it’s a cinch to get glossy tresses and
transform ourselves from leisureweardonned

but a girl can start small).
The new generation of hair care
products and tools offer quick and
easy styling saviours – and are
less damaging on the hair than
their predecessors. Having said
that, for shiny and manageable
hair, it’s all about damage control.
Look for hydrating shampoos and
conditioners, apply a hair treatment or
mask at least once a week and always
use a heat protectant before styling.
Avoid products that contain harsh
sulfates, parabens or sodium chlorine
– these will weigh your hair down,
and nobody wants a Debby Downer
raining on their fun.
Also, remember that your diet is
key to luscious locks. Hair is made up
of protein, so foods high in protein
are great for both hair growth and
strength. Essential fatty acids found
in food like salmon are also great for
boosting hair strength and shine.

brushes
A good-quality brush is as essential as shampoo and
conditioner. Brushing your hair helps activate healthy
blood circulation and stimulate hair growth. It also
redistributes oil from the scalp to help keep the outer
layer of the hair smooth and shiny.
Selecting the right hair brush depends on the style
you’re going for and your hair type. If you’re after
sleek and smooth locks with a boost of shine, opt
for a paddle brush. These smoothing brushes often
have boar or nylon bristles which reduce static so the
cuticles of the hair lie flat, making it the perfect choice
for achieving the professional salon look at home.
For a bombshell blowout, a round brush is the
grand dame. Vent holes in the brush allow the heat
from the hairdryer to circulate at the roots and add
more volume. Take it one step further with a ceramic
round brush – this heats up when you use it with a hair
dryer, styling your locks into bouncy soft curls or waves
(depending on the size of the brush).

flat irons
A high-powered flat iron can create sleek
styles on just about every hair type and
texture and are a modern-day hair staple.
They help to tame the frizzies and achieve
the look of silky, glossy hair. A ceramic flat

titanium straighteners are recommended for
taming thick, course or curly hair.
curling irons
Available in ceramic, tourmaline, titanium or gold
plated, curling irons make waves, crimps and curls
a breeze. When it comes to curling irons, one size
doesn’t always fit all. Choosing the right one for

the tighter the curl.

WASHES
Oily hair is a common problem but what
you may not know is that daily washing can
produce more oil at the roots of the hair. The
sebaceous glands get hyped up and produce
more oil – so the more you shampoo, the more
greasy your hair. The flipside is that the rest
of your hair gets stripped of oils, so greasy
roots and dry ends are evermore apparent. Dry
shampoo comes to the rescue to transform
greasy hair into manageable, fresh tresses.
Simply spray on the roots of the hair, brush
through and style!

AS WE SAY A MUCH-NEEDED
HELLO TO WARMER
WEATHER, IT’S TIME TO
‘SUMMERISE’ OUR BEAUTY
ROUTINES WITH THE
SEASON’S BEST SELF-TANNERS
AND BRONZERS.
For golden radiance the sun-smart
and skin-safe way, a self-tanner is
a summer staple. It can hide a
myriad of skin imperfections and give you
a gorgeous healthy-looking glow without
the pigmentation, wrinkles and skin cancers
doled out by the sun’s rays, thank you
very much.
The key to a perfect faux glow is having
a properly prepped canvas on which to
apply colour. Self-tanners work by staining
the top layer of your skin, so by sloughing
off dead skin cells you not only extend your
tan’s life but also prevent patchy results.
Use a buff, loofah or grainy body scrub to
exfoliate, paying extra attention to drier
areas such as elbows, knees and ankles that
soak up colour more intensely.
82 www.cosbeauty.com.au
www.cosbeauty.com.au 83
BEAUTY
Make sure your skin is cool and
dry. Moisture from wet or perspiring
skin interferes with the performance
of self-tanners. We recommend
applying moisturiser or a barrier
cream to your elbows, knees, ankles
and inside your belly button to
prevent staining.
When it’s tanning go-time, for best
results use a tanning applicator mitt.
If you’re working with a spray, hold
it around 20cm away from your body
and distribute evenly. For mousses,
lotions and gels, put a liberal amount
of product on your applicator mitt
and apply in light, vertical strokes
until evenly absorbed, one section of
the body at a time.
Leave your tan to develop as
long as possible, but if you’re hasty
to be less pasty, look for formulas
that work their magic in as little
as two hours. Keep skin hydrated
with a body moisturiser each day
to prolong your tan and promote
even fading. And make it a bronzed
shimmer lotion for good measure.
Bronzers, shimmering body oils
and face and body illuminators will
also give your skin that coveted
healthy glow. They work beautifully
to enhance the results of a self-tan
or can be used on their own for a
dose of radiance. Combine with
highlighters for a stealth beauty
effect that lights up your face like
a light bulb under your skin to
enhance all your features.
We are spoiled for choice
when it comes to products that
deliver the glow, in formulations
that can be used as standalone
products or incorporated into
moisturisers, foundations or face
and body oils for true multi-purpose
time-savers. CBM

EVER WONDERED WHAT IT’S LIKE TO HAVE EYELID SURGERY?
THIS PATIENT DOCUMENTS HER BLEPHAROPLASTY AND PTOSIS
REPAIR WITH OCULOPLASTIC SURGEON DR BENJAMIN BURT.
Patient: Antoinette, 46
Procedure: Blepharoplasty and
ptosis repair
Reason: Recommendation
by optometrist due to excess
eyelid skin and droop of eyelids
affecting vision
Surgeon: Dr Benjamin Burt,
Oculoplastic Surgeon
– www. drbenjaminburt.com
Hospital: Windsor Private Hospital,
20 The Avenue, Windsor VIC 3181
Small and hooded eyes are part of my genetics. It
wasn’t until my early 40s that I noticed my eyelids
drooped and the increase of excess skin simply
became a way of life. I would find myself continually
raising my eyebrows when speaking to people, and
when tired I would see from my peripheral vision the
sag of skin. I had regular injectables to help raise the
brow and open my eyes. My eyes felt unsupported,
almost like something had collapsed. I put it down to
the ‘ageing process’.
It wasn’t until I arranged a long overdue eye test
with my optometrist that I realised my concerns were
justified. After my consultation, she recommended
that I see an oculoplastic surgeon for an opinion and
provided a referral.
After significant research, I met with Dr Benjamin
Burt, a prominent and highly respected oculoplastic
surgeon located in Melbourne. Dr Burt ticked all the
boxes. He is known for his work, is an expert in his
field and a highly sought-after oculoplastic surgeon.
It was important that I chose a surgeon who saw the
‘person’, not the procedure. When meeting him and
his team, he explained clearly what needed to be done,
discussed the recovery process and illustrated how I
my eyes would look after the procedure. He requested
photos prior to my 40s to use as a comparison and so
he could identify my features. I instantly felt assured
and comfortable and soon after I scheduled in the
surgery date.

DAY OF PROCEDURE
I arrive at Windsor Private Hospital and am
greeted by the team. I then meet with my
anaesthetist who discusses my health and details
with full transparency of what I should expect. I
change into my hospital gown and am provided
with compression stockings to wear. I’m taken in
the pre-procedure room where I’m placed on a
pre-heated hospital bed.
Shortly after, Dr Burt meets with me. We go
over the procedure, any concerns I have, and
he draws an outline on the areas where he will
perform surgery. I feel comfortable, assured and
grateful that I am in incredible hands.
POST PROCEDURE – RECOVERY
I awake in recovery feeling comfortable. No pain,
no discomfort. Prior to leaving the hospital, I meet
with a nurse who provides me with a post-op
homecare kit and discusses what to expect.
The homecare kit includes:
• Detailed information and instruction on postoperative
care
• Chlorsig Eye Ointment 1% to apply on stiches
twice daily. This promotes healing and helps
evade infection.
• TheraPearl Eye-seential Mask – contains
flexible gel beads that conform to your face.
It is stored in the freezer and helps to soothe
and reduce swelling.
• Brauer Arnicaeze Arnica Tablets to promote
bruise healing.
• A beautiful candle, chocolate and chamomile
tea to enjoy.
The remainder of the night I have slight
irritation but zero pain. I place the icepack
as instructed and sleep elevated to assist
with swelling.
DAY ONE RECOVERY
There is increased swelling and localised weeping
but I feel zero pain and zero discomfort. I’m able
to function day to day normally and resume work.
Dr Burt’s office contacts me for post-operative
follow-up. I follow the post-operative instructions.
DAY TWO RECOVERY
Some swelling, bruising and redness as expected,
but no discomfort and no need for any pain
medication.
Today I shower for the first time. I don’t wash
my face but allow water to run down it. I keep
following the post-operative instructions.
DAY THREE RECOVERY
Swelling is reduced slightly but redness and
bruising are present. Again, no pain or discomfort
and no need for any pain medication.
My eyelids start to feel a little itchy due to
healing. I liken it to hay fever symptoms; it’s
tolerable. Followed post-operative instructions.
DAY FOUR RECOVERY
The swelling has reduced and I can open my eyes
more. Redness and bruising are present but still
no pain or discomfort and no need for any pain
medication.
My eyelids feel tight and itchy, but it’s tolerable.
Followed post-operative instructions.
DAY FIVE RECOVERY
Swelling has reduced further; redness, bruising
and itchiness still present. Followed postoperative
instructions.

DAY EIGHT RECOVERY
Today my stitches are removed, which I’m
excited about.
Swelling, redness and bruising are subsiding
and still no pain or discomfort.
I’m given Blackmores Natural Vitamin E cream
and advised to gently massage the scar tissue on
my eyelids twice daily. I’m told that lumps
of scar tissue will be felt but will resolve with
time and massage. I keep following my postoperative
instructions.
DAY NINE RECOVERY
Swelling is continuing to reduce and redness
and bruising are subsiding significantly. Still no
pain or discomfort. I follow the post-operative
instructions and use the Vitamin E cream.
DAY ELEVEN RECOVERY
At this point, I notice the healing progress is a
slower process and I’m not seeing significant
daily changes. Still zero pain and zero discomfort.
I follow my post-operative instructions and use
the Vitamin E cream.
DAY TWELVE RECOVERY
My eyes are starting to take shape
and look ‘normal’. I keep following my
post-op instructions.
ONE MONTH POST PROCEDURE
I still have slight swelling. It’s not noticeable, but
I can feel it. The base of my eyelids feels numb,
which is normal and will get better over time.
I apply makeup for the first time. I opt
for mineral makeup (Aspect Minerals) and
tubed mascara.
My eyelids feel dry along the scar, but the
scar isn’t visible when my eyes are open or
when I’ve applied makeup. The scar tissue is
healing extremely well – it’s barely noticeable.
I continue to massage Vitamin E cream to help
with the healing.
FINAL OUTCOME
I am so pleased with the outcome. The entire
process, from the procedure to recovery, was
incredibly quick and easy. Not once did I feel
pain or discomfort.
In terms of my vision, I don’t feel the need to
elevate my eyebrows to see, and I look brighter
and more awake. The scar is minimal and will
continue to get better with time. The procedure
has truly changed my life. I am beyond grateful to
Dr Benjamin Burt and his incredible team. He is
a genius and a master at his craft. CBM

PROTECT
YOURSELF
WITH SUMMER FAST APPROACHING, MANY OF
US ARE DRAWN TO ENJOYING THE SUN’S RAYS
– EVEN LYING IN THE SUN – BUT BE WARNED.
According to Cancer Council
Australia, around two in three
Australians will be diagnosed
with some form of skin cancer before
the age of 70.
One of the best ways to protect
yourself against the sun’s harmful rays
is by using a sunscreen. But one of
the most confusing terms is SPF. What
does this actually mean?
Sunscreens are merely filters, and all
of them will let some ultraviolet (UV)
radiation through at varying rates –
indicated by the Sun Protection Factor
(SPF) rating. The level of SPF given to
each sunscreen is measured using
a complex equation, and refers to the
amount of UV radiation required to
cause sunburn with the sunscreen on,
as a multiple of the amount required
without the sunscreen.
The protection given by a sunscreen
will also vary depending on:
• The amount applied
• The frequency of application
• The skin type of the user
• Immersion in water through
swimming
• The extent a person sweats
• Amount of sunscreen absorbed
by the skin.
The use of sunscreen is an important
preventative measure to help reduce
your risk of developing skin cancer
and premature skin ageing.
Skin is highly susceptible to attack
by the sun, resulting in the destruction
of collagen and elastin structure,
and, more seriously, the damage to
cells’ DNA which can lead to possible
cancer formation.
So no matter what level of
protection you choose, the best
advice is to apply your sunscreen
liberally throughout the day. CBM
SPF 50+
Despite having the highest
rates of melanoma in the
world, Australians have
been slow to adopt the
heightened protection offered
by SPF 50+ sunscreen.
According to the Cancer
Council, skin cancers account for
around 80 percent of all newly
diagnosed cancers in Australia
each year. So why has it taken
so long to introduce these
higher levels of protection to
our shores?
The concern has always been
that people will think that using
a sunscreen labelled SPF 50
means they can use less of it or
won’t have to apply it as often.
And while an increase from 30
to 50 sounds like a lot, in reality
the extra protection offered by
SPF 50 isn’t nearly as significant.
Add to this the fact the average
person puts on between 25 and
50 percent less sunscreen than
recommended, and you can see
why the authorities may have
urged caution over introducing
what merely appears to be a
significantly more effective level
of protection.

ZOOM
BOOM
LOCKDOWNS AND THE NEW WFH
CULTURE HAVE PROMPTED A BIG
SHIFT IN HOW WE VIEW OUR OWN
BEAUTY AND A NEW PRESSURE TO
‘LOOK GOOD’ ON VIDEO CALLS.
for the good part of two years, many of us have
been viewing our own digital reflection on a daily
basis, taking our place amid rows of headshots
featuring colleagues and acquaintances displayed
side-by-side, just centimetres apart, for up to an hour
or more at a time.
The frequency of video calls increased by 70%
last year for employed Australians – and all this
‘up close and personal’ Zoom time is adding an
additional layer of scrutiny as we watch ourselves
speak and react to others.
Are you noticing lines and wrinkles and double
chins you just don’t see while looking in the bathroom
mirror? If you answered yes, you’re not alone. In a
recent survey, ‘Up Close and Personal’ conducted
for Allergan Aesthetics, 68% of the 2,018 Australians
surveyed said they sometimes feel anxious about their
appearance on video calls. Thirty-one percent report
they feel more aware of their flaws on video calls and
27% say they have felt more critical of their appearance
in the past 12 months due to digital interactions.
One-quarter of respondents said they ‘feel they
look continuously tired and drawn when they see
themselves online’. Ageing was also a key issue, with
20% ‘feeling they look older on video calls’ and 25%
‘feeling pressured to look younger online’.
The research reported it’s not just fine lines and
wrinkles that Australians are taking a closer look at,
with camera angles prompting a new perspective on
the jawline – over a quarter (27%) of people surveyed
www.cosbeauty.com.au 95
COSMETIC ENHANCEMENT
cite double chins, drooping jowls and the
jawline as key facial concerns.
Sydney dermatologist Dr Natasha Cook says,
‘Not only are we seeing our own faces more
often on video calls, but the format also adds
an additional layer of scrutiny, by reflecting our
emotions and reactions in real time.
‘For some people, this is far more
confronting than simply looking in a physical
mirror for daily grooming.’
Putting your best
face forward
The survey researchers noted that Australians
are taking action to put their best face forward
– emphasised by 48% considering ways to
improve their personal appearance on video
calls ‘from over-the-counter skincare to medical
aesthetic injectable treatments’. Specifically,
14% are considering dermal filler or antiwrinkle
injections to improve their appearance
for online video calls. The Cosmetic Physicians
College of Australasia (CPCA) has reported
that, compared with the previous year, dermal
filler injections saw a significant increase of
25% and anti-wrinkle injections were up 14%.
This trend has been echoed internationally,
with a recent US study noting 86% of
dermatologists reported their patients
referenced video conferencing as a reason
for their new cosmetic concerns. Another
recent study found that among those who
previously did not have an interest in facial
cosmetic treatments, 40% now plan to pursue
treatments based on concerns from their video
conferencing appearance alone.
Sydney plastic surgeon Dr Steven Liew
says, ‘Video calls are now a norm in our
daily communication. Unfortunately, it now
provides a platform for people to not only
scrutinise their own features more closely but
also compare themselves to others.
‘This harsh reality has translated into
increased interest in facial aesthetics in clinic,
with many people stating their motivation
for enhancement is directly related to seeing
themselves on screen,’ he adds.
NOT ONLY ARE WE SEEING OUR OWN FACES MORE
OFTEN ON VIDEO CALLS, BUT THE FORMAT ALSO ADDS
AN ADDITIONAL LAYER OF SCRUTINY, BY REFLECTING OUR
EMOTIONS AND REACTIONS IN REAL TIME.
THE FACE
‘TWEAKMENTS’
WOMEN WANT MOST
New research by TEXOANE Australia, conducted
by Lonergan Research, has revealed that 70% of
Australian women aged under 60 are eager for a
‘tweakment’ – a small change to at least one of
their facial features – with Gen Z women the
most keen.
The top three areas women are seeking
tweakments for are eyes (33%), neck and jawline
(27%) and lips and mouth (24%).
Of those surveyed, 78% of women who are
open to making a change are looking to minimise
fine lines and wrinkles and 46% are wanting to
enhance and contour their facial features. The
research confirmed a strong preference for a
natural look, with 86% seeking natural results from
their tweakments.
Additionally, more women are freely admitting
to having dermal filler procedures, with 87% of
those who have undergone the treatment feeling
comfortable telling people.
‘We first noticed the ‘Zoom Boom’ last year,
with people scrutinising their faces more than ever
and noticing things they didn’t like when they are
talking on camera,’ says cosmetic physician Dr
Joseph Hkeik. ‘At All Saint Clinic, we experienced
a marked increase in requests for fillers and
intense anti-wrinkle procedures like lasers and
peel treatments, which is something we expect to
continue soaring after this current lockdown.’ CBM

Known under the brand names Botox, Dysport and
Xeomin, botulinum toxin is single-handedly the most
popular aesthetic treatment. Botulinum toxin works by
blocking nerve stimulation to wrinkle-causing muscles,
which prevents the muscle from contracting and smooths
away wrinkles and fine lines.
As a muscle relaxant, it is used to treat crow’s feet
around the eyes, the frown lines between the eyebrows
(glabellar lines) and the worry lines across the forehead.
It can also be used to produce the effect of a brow lift
by relaxing the muscles that drag down the brow. It can
also be used (off label) in the masseter muscle to create
a slimmer-looking jawline.
A few tiny injections are administered just under the
skin and the results kick in around Day 4 or 5, reaching
their full result around 2 weeks and lasting on average for
about 4 months. The procedure usually takes about 10
minutes and is generally well tolerated.
FILLERS
• Used to add volume to cheeks, midface, temple hollows and lips
• Fills in static lines, wrinkles, depressions and scars
Fillers are used to add volume and structure, fill deep folds and smooth fine lines and
wrinkles. There are different grades of fillers designed specifically for use in different parts of
the face and for different purposes – from creating fuller lips to revolumising sagging cheeks
to filling in hollowing temples. Fillers can be injected superficially to add volume to lips, fill
in fine lines or reduce under-eye circles and hollows. They can also be used more deeply to
‘sculpt’ the face and add contour, projection and definition to areas such as the cheeks, chin,
jawline and even the nose.
Today’s fillers vary in longevity, composition and viscosity, depending on what and where
is being treated, but all are gel-like in consistency and use a substance called hyaluronic
acid, which is found naturally in the body and can absorb up to 1,000 times its own weight in
water. The type of filler (composition and viscosity), where it’s used and the depth of injection
all influence the final result, and how long they last. Superficial ‘soft’ injections for lips, for
example, may last up to 6 months, while firmer filler designed for building and contouring and
injected deep on the bone can last 12-18 months.
There’s some discomfort associated with filler injections but a topical anaesthetic should
help keep you comfortable. Depending on the amount of areas, this type of procedure will
take anywhere from 15 minutes to an hour on average.
SKIN
TIGHTENING /
LIFTING
• Non-surgical face lift effect
• Tightening lax skin
Energy-based treatments for facial lifting and
skin tightening are increasingly popular. These
devices commonly use a form of energy such
as radiofrequency or ultrasound waves – to
target deeper levels of the dermis and promote
the production of new collagen formation and
remodelling. This improves skin texture and reduces
sagging skin, as well as improving drooping eyes,
jaw line and neck, and softening wrinkles around the
mouth, eyes and forehead.
Non-surgical skin tightening treatments heat the
skin’s deep dermis and subdermal layers without
damaging the outer layers of the skin.
There may be some swelling and redness that
gradually subside over the next few days but
in general most patients experience little or no
downtime. Results are usually gradual, as the new
collagen forms over the next couple of months,
and are typically long lasting – up to two years in
many cases.

COSMETIC ENHANCEMENT
SKIN
NEEDLING
• Overall skin rejuvenation
• Acne and other scarring
• Pore size reduction, textural improvements
Skin needling, or micro-needling, is a
treatment used to improve the appearance of
wrinkles, scars, stretch marks, skin texture and
premature ageing by creating tiny punctures in
the skin. The treatment achieves a controlled
injury to the skin, which stimulates the skin’s
natural growth of healthy new skin. The
epidermis is left primarily intact so the healing
period is quick – which makes it an effective
laser or chemical peel alternative for many.
Skin needling can be performed alone,
usually with a roller embedded with
medical-grade sterile micro-needles. For
more dramatic lifting and toning results,
radiofrequency (RF) micro-needling devices
combine the collagen-boosting, skin
resurfacing effect of skin needling with the
skin-tightening technology of RF energy.
After treatment, the skin is red and swollen
for around one to two days, with a light grazelike
scabbing effect forming over the treated
area on day two of recovery. Most patients are
able to return to work and normal activities
within 48 hours of treatment.
Multiple treatments are usually necessary
to achieve significant improvement in the
appearance and depth of lines and scars.
Treatment effects are cumulative and can
be seen six to eight weeks after the initial
treatment with long-lasting results.
LASERS
• Overall skin rejuvenation
• Sun damage, scarring, lines and wrinkles,
anti-ageing, pigmentation
Laser therapies work by targeting tissue and
can be used for a number of treatments,
including pigmentation, scarring, unwanted
hair, spider veins, sun-damaged skin, and
wrinkle reduction.
Advances in laser technology mean that
laser skin resurfacing, once reserved for the
treatment of severe conditions such as acne
scarring due to the extensive downtime
involved, has become an effective option for
many people seeking reduction of lines and
wrinkles and correction of pigmentation.
Most resurfacing lasers work by removing
microscopic quantities and stimulating the
production of new collagen in the skin. The
advent of fractionated laser technology,
where microscopic columns of skin are
treated while surrounding skin is left intact,
has made it possible to achieve better
results with fewer side effects. Fractionated
technology has been applied to the CO 2
laser, dramatically reducing the recovery time.
Results and downtime for all laser treatments
vary depending on the depth and strength
of treatment.
THREAD
LIFTS
• Face lift effect
• Skin revitalisation
Thread lifts have all but taken over Instagram
in the past couple of years, with many pundits
speculating thread lifts are the secret trend
behind the ubiquitous “IG face”.
Thread lifting is a minimally invasive procedure
that elevates the soft tissues of the face using
specially designed internal sutures and can
deliver dramatic results that can almost rival
a surgical facelift for the right candidate. The
procedure involves the use of multiple fine
biocompatible threads to lift and support skin
and tissues on the face (usually mid face) and
neck. By inserting threads into the cheek area,
not only can the cheek be suspended to a higher
position, but collagen production can also be
stimulated, thus improving the hydration, tone
and texture of the skin.
The threads dissolve within around nine to 12
months, whilst maintaining the revitalising and
lifting effect for around 2 years. Thread lifts are
performed under local anaesthetic and usually
take around one hour. While there may be some
visible swelling and bruising, you can go back to
work right away if you’d like.
Depending on the thread, results are
immediately apparent, but you should notice
further improvement in the days and weeks
following, as swelling and bruising starts to
subside. CBM

CHIVA-SOM, HUA HIN,
THAILAND
www.chivasom.com/hua-hin
One of the original holistic health and wellness
retreats in Asia (a pioneering venture when it
launched back in 1995), Chiva-Som has earned its
sterling reputation as one of the world’s leading
wellness resorts.
Perched on the spectacular Gulf of Thailand,
Chiva-Som is about learning to live, enjoy and
appreciate every moment, and in so doing
creating a personal path to health and wellness.
The beachfront resort’s program brings together
Western diagnostic skills and Eastern philosophies
to revitalise the mind, body and spirit.
You’ll start by selecting a Chiva-Som retreat that
best aligns with your motivations and then your
personal Health & Wellness Advisor will tailor a
bespoke program that addresses all facets of the
mind and body.
All of the resort facilities, including the luxury
accommodations, are specifically designed
to complement the healing and restorative
properties of the retreats, treatments and
evidence-based wellness cuisine.
Chiva-Som has recently launched four new
retreats to support the ‘new normal’ lifestyles.
Recognising and proactively addressing guests’
changing needs, the innovative programs enhance
the resort’s already comprehensive retreat
offerings, focusing on specific objectives from
supporting the immune system and gut health to
embracing nature and ageing gracefully.
According to Conde Naste Traveller: ‘The
offering is almost overwhelming, knocking
on more than 150 different treatments, from
traditional Thai and Ayurvedic modalities and
chakra balancing to naturopathic consultations.
Then there’s the perhaps surprising aestheticbeauty
department, plus serious remedial
physiotherapy and rehabilitation, and the
most prolific, high-profile roll-call of visiting
therapists imaginable.’
No wonder David and Victoria Beckham, Kate
Moss and Elle Macpherson have made numerous
pilgrimages to this slice of heaven.

AYURVEDIC
RETREAT
AYURVEDA PARKSCHLOESSCHEN, GERMANY
www.ayurveda-parkschloesschen.de/en
The Ayurveda Parkschlösschen is
renowned as a house of health and
since it first opened its doors in 1993
has become the European epicentre for
Ayurvedic practice.
The architecture, materials and
colours are selected according to the
universal knowledge of Ayurveda, and
everything – from the food, to the forms
of therapy, treatments, exercises, yoga
and meditation – is based on the ancient
principles of the holistic art of Ayurvedic
healing, under the careful supervision of
experienced Ayurvedic practitioners.
The focus is on Panchakarma,
an elaborate Ayervedic method of
purification combining various cleansing
and treatment procedures interwoven
with the practice of yoga.
‘Panchakarma’ is derived from two
Sanskrit words – Pancha, which means
five, and Karma, which means actions.
It offers a complete detoxification,
cleansing and rejuvenation program for
mind, body and spiritual wellbeing.
As Conde Naste Travellor describes:
‘This is detoxing the old-school way,
a millennia-based method rooted in
Ayurveda and still utterly relevant for
today. The wildly effective and heavy-duty
panchakarma (a nine-, 13-, 20- or 34-night
stay that removes metabolic waste from
the body with medical enemas) is as
successful a resolve for 21st-century
burnout as it is for good old-fashioned
weight loss.
‘Panchakarma gives phenomenal
results but involves intense scheduling:
wake-up is before 7am, with oil swishing
around the mouth, scraping the tongue (a
potential organ for infection), lots of hot
water and detox drinks, more oil in the
nostrils and ears, yoga and meditation. All
before breakfast.’
